678901 2008-06-16 21:45:00 Not sure what you mean there Lawrence.
Here's the fault from event viewer, relating to the reboot detection:

{Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere

678902 2008-06-17 00:08:00 When you removed the USB flash drive, did you use the eject hardware icon??

And stop it, not just pull it out??

Put the USB flash drives in AFTER Windows has loaded

Dont leave it in while XP is booting.

678904 2008-06-17 00:27:00 When you plug one of them in what appears under disk drives in device manager?

What name appears?

If there's nothing on both you could try going to control panel / admin tools / computer management / disk management.

If they appear here format them

678906 2008-06-17 02:36:00 USB isn't obsolete yet, so not all manufacturers have managed to understand the standard. :(

I've got a number of USB memory sticks, (some old, v1.1, some v2). They allwork on Win98SE, they work on W2k, they work on Linux. I recently bought a "new" laptop, with one USB1.1 port. My USB sticks work on it, though XP irritates me with a message telling me that a v2 stick would work faster in a USB2 socket. I haven't got a USB2 socket, so I don't wish to know that every time I plug a stick in. :badpc:

I bought a new stick last week on special. I took it home; plugged it in. No go. Not detected. Back to shop. They plugged it into one of theirs, and it worked. I showed them it not working on my machine, and my others working on my machine. Got my money back. I checked the manufacturer's web site. They say their stick works with XP SP2. I've got XP SP2 on that machine.

Surely a machine which ran W98 would be a bit slow with XP? :D

678907 2008-06-17 03:42:00 Yes a win98 pc is a bit slow on xp but it will be fast enough for an old guy to surf the net on. Plus I've added some more ram. I am just trying to get the USB ports to work so a printer can be used.
This problem has nothing to do with the devices that I am using to test it with. Everything I have plugged in to it so far can be detected no problem on other machines running xp & vista.
There is absolutely no responce when I plug any usb device in.
I would like to update the bios, but the only one I can find is dated 98.
