That might help. It might not. ;) But it won't do any harm.

Hi Graham, yeah tried both 'Load Fail-Safe Defaults' and later 'Load Optmized Defaults', but neither made any difference.

678737 2008-06-17 06:47:00 Well, despite all of the greatly appreciated assistance, nothing suggested seemed to be working. Guess the power brown-out may have damaged the HDD and might now not be fixable.

Anyway, today I purchased another 250 Gig Seagate and over the next couple of days will install it and try to recover anything I can from the old drive. Not sure how I am going to do this yet, but I will certainly be taking it easy and trying to do nothing that might destroy anything that might be left on the old drive.

To this end, I also today purchased a copy of Acronis True Image 11 Home and once I get the new HDD up and running, I will try and backup the old drive to an external USB HDD. If sucessful, that should allow me to be more aggressive in trying to recover any existing data. Well thats the plan anyway! I see on the new HDD a note to use Seagates Disk Wizzard for easy installation and while at the Seagate site I will look for any diagnostic software they might have that could be useful in checking the old drive before trying to recover data.

Again thanks to all for your assistance.

678738 2008-06-29 04:25:00 Old post I know, but am totally out of ideas now...

Think I tried everything suggested, but could not locate a live Ubuntu disk to try. Anyway...

A new (secondhand desktop) computer now. The only items from the old machine are the video card, the keyboard, the mouse and the HDD, (which has been formated and a fresh copy of Win2000 put on it.).

Yet the "Stop_inaccessable_boot_device" comes back to haunt me.

Well stuff this, so went and bought another 250 gig, formatted and installed Win 2000. (both re-installs are from an origional Win2k installation disk with its origional key).
Windows starts to boot, the splash screen appears and then the stop message is shown yet again. Have since reformatted the second Hdd and again reinstalled windows, but it made no difference.

Any thoughts ? Could the installation disk be corrupt ? Should I throw it away and see if I can find another ? Just to refresh - I need win2k as it works well with some other programs I have.

Now where did I put that shotgun - could use the disk for target practice!!!
