678286 2008-06-14 09:42:00 I use YouTube Downloader (http://youtubedownload.altervista.org/). It saves as a FLV file and will convert to MOV or WMV files. Works quite well. Jester (13)
678287 2008-06-15 07:00:00 In reply to Rob-on-Guitar using KeepVid on the clip here:

youtube.com

it downloaded as Flv 8,534kb and Mp4 16,483kb (the two alternatives offered). The second one was really good quality (just viewed on the screen) whilst the flv was a bit grainy/pixilated.

To Pingu45 and Jester: I’ve downloaded both your suggestions and YouTubeDownloader seems to work a treat at downloading and converting. Trouble is, when I convert the good quality MP4 file above, import it into MovieMaker and then save it as a MM Movie the good quality all goes to pot! I’ll try the AShampoo alternative a bit later. It seems I’ll have to sort out how to improve the quality of the MM file (not holding my breath there) or come up with a free alternative!

Once again THANKS for everyone’s input – keep the suggestions coming please

678288 2008-06-15 07:23:00 Yup the quality is just as good as whats on the site.

Altho I dont know if the Keepvid site is the prob or Itunes.

The MP4 file you get from here, may work in Quicktime, but it doesnt mean it'll work in Itunes, or sync to your Ipod after. If this is what you want to do

The MP4 versions of YouTube videos (pressf1.co.nz) are actually encoded by YouTube for use on iPods (iPhone and iPod Touches to be precise).

678292 2008-06-15 23:33:00 Hello again folks

I’m not too worried about the iPod angle – I just want to play around chopping some of these videos up a bit. The only thing I’ve available for that is Win MovieMaker nad if you even start with a converted MP4 and then choose “Best Quality for Playback on my Computer the quality takes a big dive although the file size is small. I know there’s the “Best fit to file size” and “Other settings” options so I’ll have to spend a bit of time playing with those to get an acceptable quality/file size ratio.

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a movie editing equivalent to the open source software “Audacity” – then we’d really be smokin’!! (Is it worth starting a new thread on that?)
