407979 2005-11-27 20:35:00 For price. No difference. Last time to Japan I got Amex cheques, cannot remem which bank thou. I asked her what is the diff between JP Yen cash or AMEX CHEQ, she said none. When I got to JP to cash them out, no commission, if you go to some countries there is a commission in a % or a fixed fee per transaction.

Yes there is a charge, a % I think (with a min amount if you purchase v less amounts) at a NZ Bank. Thou some overseas countries may still charge a % or a fee, depends on them....

For the avg amount I be more concerned with the FX rate of diff banks. By all means do a maths calculation of the fee + FX of each bank. Easiest way is to go online.

With c/c the FX rate is generally not that good (not limited to cashout but to purchases too), heard from a former bank worker that countries always use the quick rate, that rate is a bit more expensive. Of course the best way is to carry thousands of dollar of cash in foreign currency but there is a danger to that ..

407980 2005-11-27 20:50:00 If you go to BNZ to get chqs and you are a BNZ customer, you get them cheaper, yes. The fee is discounted, probably apply to other banks too but do your maths as each bank have diff FX rates.

Technically speaking, I think with AMEX CHEQS if you go to any world in a AMEX Office the fee is free. From other banks, they can charge you a fee for cashing it out....

I think Thomas Cook is if you have a ISIC card or a Kathmandu Summit membership card the fee is maybe waived or discounted. If you use Thomas Cook CHQ and go to other Thomas Cook office to cash out that may be wavied or discounted too.....

407981 2005-11-27 21:13:00 Why bother with travell cheques. Work out how much they cost you here. How much they charge when you cash them. Add to that the inconvenience of having to carry your passport when you cash one. Not worth the effort.
I always get US dollars here in NZ. You can use them anywhere in the world and there's no extra fees involved.
Credit cards can be handy in some places, but watch out for up to 10% added to the price of your purchase buy shopkeepers.Plus what the banks charge you for converting it back to $NZ.
