407899 2005-11-27 00:59:00 Aren't all 086 numbers supposed to be free? why does xtra have an 087 number & all the other ISPs have a 086 number? Greven (91)
407900 2005-11-27 01:55:00 Aren't all 086 numbers supposed to be free? why does xtra have an 087 number & all the other ISPs have a 086 number?086 and 087 numbers are considered local calls. So if you're on a plan where local calls cost you (i.e. HomeLine Economy and most Business plans) you get charged.

iirc, the 087 numbers were directed to Telecoms kit (IPNet), and the 0867 numbers were used for directing to the ISP's own kit, or being redirected to Telecom's IPNet in areas that the ISP didn't have their own gear.

This has changed now, but Xtra, as they use Telecom's infrastructure needs only one dialup number.

407901 2005-11-27 02:05:00 The reduced line charge with a fee per call is a telephone thing. That's a major part of Telecom's business. If you make calls to Xtra, a separate part of Telecom's business, or another ISP, that's up to you. You'll get charged for each call. It might add up.

I think that option was made available so older people who use phones very little, but might need to make emergency calls would find it more affordable to have a phone.

It's fine for me as I'm on UBS with another ISP, however still have to have a Telecom connected phone line to have UBS.

I pay $25 per month or something to that effect. I don't actually have a phone connected to the jacks, I use my cell for all incoming and outgoing calls.
