The older kids won't be very impressed, but the young'uns will! If you give them to the option #1, include some non-online games like chess, checkers and card games . . . lots of them . For option #2, give them some world maps (I install the Digital Encyclopedia in it for grammar school students . ) Give them lots of fonts and even the freebees from Hallmark Cards for the Crayon Factory! I don't know about NZ, but here in the states, we get tax refunds (against taxable earnings) for items donated to non-profit organizations (schools, churches, thrift stores, etc . ) . . . . . . . besides, the non-noble metals (lead, arsenic, etc) are not earth friendly and rendering them down to the fewest parts-per-million via explosives DOES NOT CHANGE THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE of these metals; they still exist and will pollute your drinking water or crops or air . |

She had been doing school work on it and some misguided person had thought they were doing her a favour giving it to her. I couldn't fix it. Too old. Its pointless. And just because someone is old doesn't mean they would want some old rubbish. They probably have more money than you and would prefer something reliable, upgradable and capable. |

Reminds me of a motor cycle yard on Coventry Road, Birmingham in the 1950s, run by two brothers, it may have been Vale-Onslows. They had hundreds of 1920s/1930s bikes in varying states of go-ability, about ₤5 each. They could hardly give them away. They all went down the tip to make room. Now they would be worth millions. |

PC . . . don't agree here . . . . There are a lot of oldsters who have absolutely nothing . . . not even family, who rot away in homes for the wretched one day at a time . What's wrong with an older puter? They WORKED when they were new and at the time everyone thought they were the ultimate electronic experience . They play games . . . and I have given a few of my 450's and 500's to oldtimers who thought they died and went to heaven . I also have had great times showing them the way to turn the puter on and access a game or two . They are most grateful . As far as old-poor-no family-and no one caring for them in these "rest homes", we have poor people here in the US who welcome ANY input from the outside world and visiting them with a modern contraption gives them a lot of joy and feelings that they count as humans . I am sorry if someone feels they are getting junk when the get older puters and stuff . Jaded persons are not included in my circle of friends and the poor refugee kid who lost her will to live because her puter died isn't even on my radar screen . :groan: Guessing it's very nice in the "retirement" homes in NZ with everyone getting visitors all day long with a stream of new electronic gizmos being dropped off by relatives and friends . It just ain't so here in the US . Maybe we can send some of our antiques to NZ for better treatment there, the people, not the puters! |

| 407629 | 2005-11-25 21:01:00 | People keep giving my son Ziggy old computers. He brings them home and gets them going, mixes, matches, and accumulates junk, which could well be a habit i'm guilty of passing to him geneticly :p Hes now getting pentium 1 and 2's thrown at him. I've told him no more pre-pentiums or printers as i allready have a big enough pile waiting to be dumped. If someone can find a use, then good, otherwise just get rid of the ****** things. If you live in CHCH, molten media (http://www.molten.org.nz/) will probably take them. There may be other oginisations that do similar work in other centres, perhaps an E sent to molten will help you find them? |

| 407630 | 2005-11-25 21:08:00 | Allthough fun with explosives and 486's does appeal to me. I set fire to a working valve TV once, it ammazed me how long it went for before the flames took its life. Sound only stopped as flames consumed the speaker! :D :D How about fun with a tesla coil? :D :D |

| 407631 | 2005-11-25 22:06:00 | . . . . . . . . and just a sidebar about destroying puters and any electronic stuff . . . California has enacted laws making it a crime to throw them in the dump or anywhere that is not a designated disposal site for electronics . It costs over $20 . 00 to legally can one of these . . . . . and DON'T read between the lines that by giving them to old folks alleviates that charge either! When I retired from the automotive/diesel repair trade a year and 1/2 ago, the new law that got passed requires such shops to (get this!) . . . . . PROVE that the number of flashlight batteries they bought during the year equals the number that were legally disposed of by Environmental Resources Inc . , a federally licensed and accredited company designed to "safely" transport and destroy those dangerous and hazardous flashlight batteries! Don't forget that there is also a fee for that too . :angry . . . . . . now if I can find a good enuff way to donate previously owned batteries to rest homes and primary schools! |
