678777 2008-06-16 05:23:00 I should know this, the curses of working 12hr night shifts...

Anyway, Ive forgotten how to sum a column of cells so it returns just the number of cells that contain text, ignoring empty cells.

Thanks

John in Mosgiel.

678778 2008-06-16 05:45:00 Click the top Cell you want, then hold down the shift key then the last cell you want, then press the Autosum Icon ( looks like a backward 3) That will add all the cells totals, and empty cells will be classes as 0 wainuitech (129)
678779 2008-06-16 21:59:00 =COUNTA()

will return the number of non-blank cells.

Is that what you're after?

678780 2008-06-16 22:55:00 =sum(numer1,number2....) it treats blank cells as 0 masdaman (12729)
678781 2008-06-16 23:12:00 I got the feeling John was looking for the number of cells that text appeared in, not summing numbers. Could be wrong though.

This works in Excel 2000 and up, not sure about earlier versions.

If you highlight the range of cells you want, on the bottom of the screen, near the right, you will notice that Excel has summed up the totals. If you right click that total, you will see a range of other options. (Average, count, min, max) which can be helpful.
