678551 2008-06-15 01:40:00 First of many small problems..... To connect to the internet(broadband) I have to enter in the DNS Server settings my ISP gave me. This is not a problem for me but my wife has a laptop setup for her school network which I will be murdered for if anything goes pear-shaped. If I put the DNS Server settings on her laptop to allow her access at home, will it muck up her school network settings?
Her laptop seems to have IP and DNS settings on auto.
She used to connect at home via wireless which I didn't mind tinkering with as its a separate network connection but a change of room has left the wireless signal too weak to be practical so we had cable run to the office room but when she plugs in it seems to think its on the school network.
ADSL comes in downstairs to a DSL-302G modem which is plugged into a DSE 802.11b wireless router. At her end is a DL704UP, the idea being to allow her internet access and everyone else access to a printer via the print server.
Its all getting too complicated for me.
I was hoping it might be possible to set one of these router/modems to allow the laptop to connect without her having to change anything. DNS Server settings applied to router maybe? Don't know whats possible.

678552 2008-06-15 01:51:00 If the TCP/IP settings are set to Obtain Automatically then your router should be issuing the address OK , Its the Router that sends out the DNS and IP information.

What may be causing it is if your firewall is not set to allow the IP address through.

Click start/run, type in CMD <press enter> In the command box type in ipconfig <press Enter>see what address you are getting back, from memory the 704UP should be 192.168.1.1 for the gateway, and 192.168.1.? for the IP address.

If you get a address of 169.xxx.xxx.xxx with x being different numbers the laptops not talking to the router.

What firewalls do you have on the laptop?

678553 2008-06-15 02:42:00 Thanks for prompt reply wainuitech. Will try that later and see. Wife has gone into school with laptop. If its any help, when I plug in my laptop(Wireless off) I get

IP Address 192.168.0.125
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1

678554 2008-06-15 03:00:00 When you do the ipconfig you should get the same IP address on your wifes laptop as your laptop, with the exception of the last number in the first IP,if the router is connecting correctly it should be 192.168.0.X with x being any number from 2-255, except the same as yours, as you can only have 1 number per PC on a LAN.

The Gateway & Subnet mask will be the same as yours.

Just need to look at what firewalls are there.

678555 2008-06-15 03:57:00 Will check out when she gets back. In the meantime....
Unless a laptop is plugged directly into the 704UP no one can print?
The reason I got it was so that anyone plugged in anywhere on home network could print to printer and I even drew a picture for the salesman to show layout. He assured me it was a 20min job to get everyone setup:illogical
Printer shows up in control panel and says it is ready but printing fails.
On 704UP printer light is blinking, which the manual says is data transmission? but maybe not because its blinking all the time.

678556 2008-06-15 09:52:00 OK. Wifes laptop reports...

IP Address 192.168.8.25
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.8.2

but the main issue has now become that printer is not accessible to other users unless they are plugged directly into back of print server.

678557 2008-06-15 10:07:00 Ok theres the problem - look at the IP address

IP Address 192.168.8.25
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.8.2

The IP Address is set to a different range , the differences are highlighted / Bold , the default gateway is totally different, and I suspect the IP is set to that address - go into the Control Panel / Network Connections / Right click the Local Area Connection /Properties/Internet protocol TCP/IP - double click and see what they are - you may find its been set to the school network - if you select Obtain automatically, it should pick up your LAN connection, and by rights it should also automatically pick up the schools one as well when plugged in.

Also look at the DNS servers, they should be set to obtain automatically as well.

Here is an Example (www.imagef1.net.nz) of my set up - I have the DNS set to Telstra Servers ( I'm with Telstra) but thats only because for some stupid reason the remote access to this PC wont connect unless I have them set - on all the other PC's here they are set to Obtain Automatically.

678558 2008-06-15 10:09:00 As far as firewalls, seems to be just Windows Firewall bones (10257)
678559 2008-06-15 10:11:00 Reasons in Post 7 :) wainuitech (129)
678560 2008-06-15 10:15:00 On her laptop everything is set to obtain automatically. I have the same scenario as you. To connect to my ISP I have to set the DNS on my laptop. I'm too chicken to do that to hers in case I muck up her network stuff at school. (A quick way to become single again I think)
Thats why I was hoping something could be done on the router side of things to use that DNS and leave the laptops on automatic(If this is possible).
