680022 2008-06-19 00:37:00 Hi Team,

I have 2x 1Gig sticks of (Kingston value) DDR400 (PC3200) ram and 1 spare ram slot on my Mobo.

Will adding 1x 500Mb of DDR333 (PC2700) ram to the spare slot slow the operation of the DDR400 ram ?

If so, would I get any speed up to applications due to the extra ram or would they run slower ?

Configuration =
Intel p4-2.53: 2Gig DDR400 ram: 2x 80 gig HDD:
Win2000 Pro sr3: Microsoft Office 2003 sr3:

Your assistance gratefully accepted,
Phil.

But if the system is running in dual channel mode now, if you add the 333 ram, it may run in single channel mode.

680024 2008-06-19 00:51:00 Adding extra RAM would probably help speed up things but looking at your configuration, it isn't really RAM intensive and 1GB should be enough.

If you have more RAM then add it in but I wouldn't go out and buy some more.

As far as I know, all the memory in the system will downclock to match the speed of the slowest stick (which in your case means 333MHz), or the max speed the motherboard can handle - whichever is slower.

That said, I doubt you'll see any great benefit from adding another 512MB - 2GB should be more than enough for most tasks.

680026 2008-06-19 01:46:00 be aware that some older motherboards only accept ram in teh third slot if single sided DIMMS are used otherwise the third slot is disabled. smokey (13809)

YES definitely the faster ram will always 'clock down' to the speed of the slower ram

You need to check taskmanager under 'performace' tab.....look in the 'physical memory' box to see how much ram you currently have available ......if you have say 500mb currently available then it's not that likely that adding more will be of any benefit anyway - (dependant on the apps you are wishing to run) .......

680028 2008-06-19 06:09:00 Your memory will slow down, but it should depend on the memory controller on your motherboard in the end on just how bad the effects are. To be honest, I wouldn't bother adding more memory for you, have you actually checked how much memory your applications are using? I haven't seen any of my games utilise more than 1gb so far (no, I don't/can't play Crysis :(), let alone my office suite nor Adobe Photoshop/Indesign when working with high-resolution tasks.

Only thing that I can think of that having 512mb extra ram will improve is maybe loading times in some games (not normal applications) and even still, it shouldn't be substantial enough to warrant a purchase.

If you have already got it, then just shove it in and see what happens :P It's not like it will explode or anything, if the motherboard doesn't like it, it will simply give you some beeps/an error and you can switch that thing off and correct it.
