679687 2008-06-18 01:59:00 I am searching for hardware/software that will copy Standard 8 or Super 8 film to DVD format. There are companies that offer this service, but the volume of film involved makes it cost prohibitive. Can anyone tell me where I can source the hardware/software required to perform this type of transfer,
thanks,
Rick

679689 2008-06-18 02:28:00 What inputs/outputs does whatever have??

If its got RCA outputs, all you need is something like a capture card / tuner with video in. And maybe an adapter to connect it.

Some tuners come with a program, when you buy them.

Or you can download it.

Run the program, select the input (like video in, CVBS etc). And record. It may have the option to record in Mpeg format. And just use something like Nerovision or a free program to burn it to DVD. Just dont forget to connect the sound, to line in on the soundcard, or you wont have sound.

Whats the specs of your system Rick?

If this Super8 has firewire, it'll be even better. All you have to do is buy a firewire card and connect it

679690 2008-06-18 04:37:00 speedy: Super8 is all analog, all film, no plugs or connectors at all, (its not 8mm video tape also known as Video8), you play it on a projector not a TV :)

OP: I guess you have 2 options, one search out a machine that will convert it(prob not cheap), or go for a cheap and nasty solution of finding a nice projection room and screen and re-capture it off the screen onto a digital handycam.

Some flatbed scanners have a film capacity, but it seems to only be for short pieces at a time

Yes Speedy he is talking about Super 8mm and Standard 8mm movie film taken with a movie film camera, maybe a bit before your time. I have a few reels of it myself.

679692 2008-06-18 05:56:00 lol well that depends on how old that is. And how old/young you think I am Speedy Gonzales (78)
679693 2008-06-18 06:04:00 a few years ago we captured some 16mm to video tape by pointing a camera at the projected screen, it worked ok except for sound issues (picking up ambient sound) and the picture wasn't flash but that sort of added something to it...

Then just captured onto pc.

This can be a hard thing to do if you want it with clean picture and clean sound, which is why they charge an arm and a leg to do it. good luck!

679694 2008-06-18 06:26:00 Another way of doing it was with a square tube you bought which had a right angle bend in the middle of it and a mirror at that bend. One end you had your 8mm movie projector and the other end you had the video camera. If you can still buy them that would be the way to go. Also have one of those video cameras that record direct to DVD. Most 8mm/ Super 8mm film was silent.

I think Speedy is probably old enough to remember Super 8mm, I know I am. My grandad used to have some film of myself and my cousins when we where knee high to a grasshopper on Super 8mm - back in the 70's - bit like those classic L&P adverts :D

679696 2008-06-18 06:55:00 Yes I thought Speedy was about my age, 5 score+ he should remember the old 8mm movie cameras. Almost everybody's Uncle had one filming the Christmas family dinner Bantu (52)
