410524 2005-12-05 23:18:00 Hi all. Does anyone out there know anything about how photo blocks are made? I don't know if the term "photo block" is correct, but I've seen them in gift shops - unfortunately not close enough to get a good look. They appear to be painted blocks of mdf or similar, usually square, where the whole block is painted black or some other colour, then the pic is mounted flush so there is no edge or frame around the photo. Sometimes they come in sets of 9 (or some other number) so they can be mounted on the wall with a little gap between each individual block. Hope that's clear (ish?). Thanks. k8smum (6062)
410525 2005-12-05 23:26:00 Could it be a normal photo glued on Rob99 (151)
410526 2005-12-05 23:31:00 I'd guess contact cement. :D Graham L (2)
410527 2005-12-06 00:39:00 Maybe, but what would the glue do to the photo? I'm assuming these things are made to last more than 5 minutes. k8smum (6062)
410528 2005-12-06 00:46:00 what would the glue do to the photo?A guess, it would stick it to the block. Rob99 (151)
410529 2005-12-06 00:49:00 Rubber cement shouldn't hurt a photo. I used to do a fair bit of "pasteup" for small magazines and that's what was used to stick photos and text on the masters. A "drawing supplies" shop will happily sell you a very expensive product to do the job, but I'd just raid my puncture kit. ;)

If you use inkjet printed "photos", they might need a protective coat ... again there are expensive sprays, but I've used clear poly spray with complete success.

In an effort to understand more about the "man" behind the sarcasm, I followed one of your links. A pity you don't put the same effort into proofing your pages as you do to sharing your sharp wit: www.silvertech.co.nz

410531 2005-12-06 08:13:00 Hi ya..............

You can do this 2 ways, attach the picture on to a pre painted peice of wood.i presume mdf you talking about or you also put them on canvas frames...........

the photographers in my family do this both ways........... and then they sell their items........... the are usually sent to a specialty photo / gallery to this in wanga's but i presume larger centres can do this in there own city?

they do look good. attaching to the wall takes a bit, canvas is better for that as its lighter, but the quality of the phot before printing has to be a good quality one or you are wasting your money.

Both SIL's been to africa, and came back with amazing photos of the animals and life their and these sell very well.

best of luck.

i did have a link for this sort of work but cant find it at moment if i find it tonight ill post it.
