I see Jen objected to it in another thread so it's probably unethical.

409302 2005-12-01 18:46:00 It's a peer to peer (P2P) file sharing program. Users allow files on their pc's to be shared with others and others can search the internet to find what they are looking for, such as software, video, photos, documents, music etc.

A lot of copyrighted material is traded on most of the networks.

Most P2P programs these days do not use a centralised server but rather build links between the users logged in at the time, not unlike a giant spider web. Some popular programs can have over 10 million users logged in similtanously and trillions of files available.

The files are sent as parts of files or bits and the way some P2P work as that you will get some parts of the file before the other depending on whats available at the time eg you may get the file as 7,2,5,1,3,6,8,4 which is then reassembled on your pc as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.

The term torrent comes from the fact that with large amounts of users and maybe the same file available in thousands of locations you will recieve a torrent of bits, faster downloading and quick completion of your file. But then if you search for something obscure you may find only 1 person who has it and it can be a case of waiting due to their bandwidth or the fact they may logon and off and it could take weeks.

I've got azereus installed on my computer. I've found a website that supports torrents. How do i get the download started? On the assumption you want a linux torrent, you go to the torrent site, click on the torrent file. This is usually a small file that Azureus (the client) uses to find the real download.
IN Firefox (and I assume other browsers) you can choose to open the torrent with an app of your choice, select your client (Azureus)
If the small torrent file is downloaded to your harddrive, just start Azureus, select open from the dropdown and select the downloaded torrent file

Proprietary warning... don't use your torrent client to d/load copywritten software :)

409306 2005-12-01 19:28:00 Where did the term "copywritten" come from? Copyright is the artist's right to stop people from copying their work. Where does writing come into it? Greven (91)

here's nothing inherently unethical about it, it's just that it's used by a lot of people to share copyrighted material .

BitTorrent is a very easy and fast method of sharing legitimate resources . It's not the technology that's unethical it's just the way some people use it that's unethical .
