679121 2008-06-17 01:47:00 Hi there,
I have recently been given a second hand laptop (Toshiba A10) , knowing the dial up modem in it was not working. I brought a new modem and installed it, using drivers downloaded from the Toshiba website.
According to the Modem properties, it is working correctly. However when I try to connect to the internet I immediately get the following message:
"ERROR 633: The Modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly."
When I click on More Info it leads me to the Troubleshooting page, which tells me to check the port settings in the device manager. However when I go into the device manager there is no 'Ports (COM & LPT)' tree listed.
I have tried Googling but find the wealth of technical information quite baffling. I would really appreciate some advise, either on how to fix this problem, or directions to a web page/tutorial that may help.
Thanks:thumbs:

679124 2008-06-17 02:13:00 I take it, its a Toshiba internal modem? Since you downloaded drivers for it from the Toshiba site?

If it isnt whats the brand/model of the modem?

I would open internet explorer then go to tools / internet options / connection. If there's an entry here for the previous modem / ISP, delete it.

And then recreate it with the new modem

Since its XP, is SP1,2 or 3 installed as well?

Look under modems in device manager, if its internal. Does this entry appear and if you click on the +, does it show the modem you installed here?

679125 2008-06-17 02:59:00 Yes, the modem is a Toshiba one, Toshiba Internal 56K Modem Board G86C0000F110. This new one I have just installed is identical in every way to the old, not working one that was removed.
I have checked for any previous connections, but there are none. The laptop was given a clean install before I got it. When the clean install was done, the original modem was already dead, so no drivers were installed for it.
It is running WinXp SP1.
In the device manager the modem shows as 'TOSHIBA Software Modem'

Thank you :o)

679126 2008-06-17 03:25:00 Ok since theres no connection, we'll have to make one .

Go to network connections, create a new connection .

Then click on next / connect to the internet / next / set up my connection manually / next / connect using a dial up modem / next

Type in the name of the ISP / next / phone # for it / next

Put in the username / password / next . Tick the add a shortcut to the desktop box .

Then double click on the icon on the desktop / properties / options . Change idle time before hanging up to never . OK . Then click on dial . See what happens now

Then open internet explorer / tools / internet options / connections . What you've entered above should be here . Change it to never dial a connection .

If you go to device manager, and double click on the modem entry in device manager / general tab . Does it say its working properly?

Go to the diagnostics tab . Click on query modem, as well . Is it OK , or does it bring up an error?

You wont see anything under COM or LPT, because LPT is a printer not a modem, and a com port is a serial port .

The modem isnt plugged into either . Which is why this modem doesnt appear there .

Do what he said:

Go to the diagnostics tab. Click on query modem, as well. Is it OK , or does it bring up an error?

If it doesn't give an error then the problem is not with the modem itself., If it does, then its either stuffed or the driver is.

Error 633 - The modem or other connecting device is already in use or not configured properly.

Cause

1. A hung system.

2. Incorrect Windows connection settings.

3. A corrupt Xtra dialer.

4. Conflicting Internet enabled third party software.

5. Incorrect modem settings.

6. A serious system fault.

679129 2008-06-17 03:38:00 Ok does it say its working under the modem entry in device manager when you double click on it tho?? Under general .

And does an error appear when click on query modem??

That'll at least tell us if its working .

If you double click on the icon you created on the desktop, then go to the general tab, does the modem appear here?

If it does click on configure, is everything ticked?

679130 2008-06-17 04:27:00 When I query the modem I get this message:

"The port that the modem is attached could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional."

In the device manager it says "This device is working properly"

When I double click the ClearNet icon on the desktop, then click General - the modem is there.
When I then click on Configure, all boxes are ticked.

This laptop had a clean install before it was given to me, so there is very little else installed on it yet, other than Windows.

:thanks
