680431 2008-06-20 00:27:00 I'm not digging dirt but am wondering, since I've been getting more requests lately for computer help from friends and such, what qualifications do you techs out there have and should I be looking at applying to train for them, I already work full-time as a joiner but am having some health issues. I already have an IT diploma from Nelson polytech but its only at level 5.

Thanks for reading this post and if you don't want to put the info on here can you PM me please.

Gary

680432 2008-06-20 00:37:00 No IT quals at all, but then I'm not a tech I suppose - I'm an ICT Manager . . . . . big cushy leather chair, gorgeous secretary, putting green in my office etc :D

To be honest, unless you're really committed to updating your credentials, I don't think they're worth having . If you got an MCSE 5 years ago for example, do you necessarily know anything about emerging technologies like MS Server 2007, Vista or virtualisation?

I deal with a LOT of techs in my job, and I far prefer the guys who actually do break/fix in the real world who may not have degrees in computer science etc . A lot of 'qualified' people are woefully out of touch with IT . . . . . . I know this is a bit of a generalization, but I find it to be true by and large .

A general qualification likes yours is a great starting point Gary, but I don't know if I'd advocate any further study, unless an employer is going to pay for or subsidize it . :2cents:

680434 2008-06-20 01:03:00 I'll second What nofam wrote - i do have Qualifications, but that's because i wanted them, not needed .

Before I started my own business I went job hunting Was right on Xmas from memory, I knew what I was wanting to do, and out of the the 3 interviews I had before I met the guy who talked me into starting my own business the whole lot said the same thing - qualifications are ok I guess - but They wanted to see what a person could do, and either had their own set of questions or tasks .
One guy actually took the copy of the qualifications and simply binned them, didn't even look . The only reason I didn't get the jobs was because others had more "hands on experience" .

In fact I wont name the company in wellington, but they are very well known, a couple of years back I was in there "chatting with the head Tech", who I get on real well with - he said out of the 8 guys there at the time only one has any actual qualifications, yet I know they all are very knowledgeable people .

In the repair business its quite simple, what would you rather have - someone who has a mountain of quals and says they can do the job - or someone who can actually fix things with no quals . Not saying Quals are unimportant, but if they are not required then no need to have them .

680435 2008-06-20 01:32:00 Snap nofam...almost same job, but i dont have the gorgeous secretary!!

I would take experience over qualifications, as technology moves so fast, you need to be able to see the wider picture rather than getting stuck on a technology that will be outdated within 12-24months and I hate studying.

Nothing personal, I'm sure you are a terrific ICT manager .
But every IT manager I have had was a complete half-wit as far as PCs go .

I have some quals . A PolyTech qual, MS certification, although its out of date now and I don't care, and a cabling qual .

But I'd recommend getting the EXPERIENCE first .
And I mean practical real experience not just messing about with your home PC .

Yeah I know but I have to bring in an income as well, that's why I just been doing stuff in my spare time at home for friends etc but I have got some ideas now from all the replies

680440 2008-06-20 08:45:00 I guess it depends on where you want to get to. Sure - experience counts for heaps - but there are plenty of people out there who have found out that an IT degree will get you places and is not a waste of time (as long as you have some clues as well). johnd (85)
