410742 2005-12-06 22:54:00 Hi there
My partner and I are looking at buying some land in an area with no phone lines. I need to have both landlin type phone and internet for my business and wondered if anyone had any ideas on this.
I know if I lived in Auckland or somewhere it would not be a problem but I don't......

Any info wouold be appreciated

Thanks :)

410744 2005-12-06 22:58:00 Ring Telecom. Prescott (11)
410745 2005-12-06 23:04:00 It is roughly in the back of Picton area on a hill and no don't think there is wireless available.
We don't want to pay for lines as it would be to expensive...
Havn't rung telecom yet but will do , just wanted so other ideas fi there were any out there.
I know there is pacific.net here which may solve the internet connection but not the phone thing.

410746 2005-12-06 23:14:00 if there is no wireless (if you can get internet then you can get phone) and it costs to much to put wires in then your only left with sat phone which would be exspencive .

no cell phone coverage there ??

one last thing . . . . . . one or two houses around here run transmitters for the phones . telecom setup a transmitter on the house that points to one up on a hill . if there is somewhere thats in line of sight (roughly) that has telephone lines and power then you could do the same .

410747 2005-12-06 23:22:00 What kind of setup would give you like a landline phone over the internet?
Not Skype? or is that what you are meaning?
There is cell phone coverage but 027 here is rubbish, it cuts out all the time and I miss calls. A lot of people still won't ring cell phones beleive it or not.

The transmitter thing sounds like an idea and could possibly work, it would depend on the distance I guess.

410748 2005-12-06 23:44:00 use an external aerial on the cell phone, it helps with the reception quite a lot. how bad is 021 there ? tweak'e (69)
410749 2005-12-06 23:51:00 I have no external aerial nor does my partner, he used to have 025 with no worries but because telecom are pusing people out of that and onto 027 he went for it, cheap deal on the phone.
I think 021 is ok, havn't heard otherwise.
I got a Harrier phone for my business, great for doing notes and other stuff and sync with the computer.
Should of got a Blackberry but I hear they are getting sued or something?

410750 2005-12-07 01:14:00 If Telecom fails, try FarmSide (http://www.farmside.co.nz/). I've only heard good things about them. pixeldust (6619)
410751 2005-12-07 01:22:00 Thanks for that info, looks interesting.
At least I know there are products out there. Have just been checking out bordernet who brought the satellite side of ihug earlier this year.
They have Voip in Oz but not here yet as that would be perfect.
Although in theory it should work if you had the modem for it??
Anybody got any ideas there?

Cheers :)
