412051 2005-12-13 03:33:00 It sure is, but this time it is different. Although this generation does have it's good bands, there are very few that are AS good as the bands of old. This is demonstrated by the huge numbers of teenagers that prefer the music of their parent's generation - music that would traditionally be considered far too old for them. There are also a lot of bands inspired by the old bands that have a very similar sound to them.

Have you heard Glenn Miller recently?

But according to Metla, music has advanced by leaps and bounds since those days, and he would have been much better had he taken lessons from school bands, or even Iron Maidens

412053 2005-12-13 03:49:00 Look at the names of those you mention. That should show the type on noise they make.
Normal people use their own names. If you lack the guts to put your own name to anything you can't be much good

Um, so does that mean that the only music/musicians you consider good are ones who use their own name? So no bands? Last time I checked Goldenhorse was a band's name. So is Foo Fighters and Placebo. They are no good becasue they use a band name? I'm confused here Jack about what you are trying to say.

And individual artists have used stage names for centuries, just as authors have used pen names. Was Dean Martin your kind of singer? Born Dino Paul Crocetti. How about Nina Simone? Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon.

I think judging musicians by what they choose to call themselves is a tad short-sighted, don't you?

412054 2005-12-13 03:54:00 I don't care what they call themselves. I can think of some words ... :D But it's all rubbish. Graham L (2)
412055 2005-12-13 03:58:00 Because you have heard it all?

Or is that judgement based on piffle on the radio?

412056 2005-12-13 07:02:00 Its not so much the music is crap, its the production values that are crap and this affects music across all styles. The modern CD is so over engineered and produced that the spontaneity and musical values have been destroyed. tutaenui (1724)

Would/could tool be tool without the kind of engineering that went into everything they did after the opiate CD? No, the problem is not so much over engineering, but lack of engineers who can work on one take and get a good sound, something that is so often needed with lo budget acts.

OK.. I'm a sound enginer, so i am biased, but if the band plays well, the venue/studio is good, the gear is good, and it still sounds like crap, then someone isn't doing thier job well.

If you want spontaneity, go for live recordings, and yes, there are those of us who still do them.

Agree 100% Most music today is so compressed for commercial radio and silly little stereo units.

That is true with many bands and artists today putting out over enginered c**p. But still many of the bands are talented and when you see them live you're still hugely impressed.

Lets remember we could easily dismiss the 90's for a period of terrible music (Lets see, Spice Girls, Vengaboys, Ricky Martin, Lou Bega, to name a few artists that we find shocking today - hopefully all of us) but then we're ignoring the great music that was also produced in the 90's.

Same goes with every generation, lucky for you older folk, you've forgotten the terrible stuff you listened to and only remember the good stuff, and us younger folk are to young to know any of the older bad music.
