When the European settlers arrived the Maori had been naming the geography -- in detail -- for hundreds of years. Even though the settlers put English place names down for new settlements, many if not most of the existing Maori names for areas stuck. Of course there wasn't an official policy of extermination of the original inhabitants. That probably makes a difference too. |

| 412348 | 2005-12-14 04:24:00 | The only map that's any use is on a scale of 1:1. It can be a bit tricky to fold up, however. :cool: | Graham L (2) | ||
| 412349 | 2005-12-14 04:38:00 | Of course there wasn't an official policy of extermination of the original inhabitants . That probably makes a difference too . Hmmmmmmmm . . trying to decipher that comment . . . . . . . Is it about the American Indians? Or the Aboriginals? Or Both? Almost as bad as the French teaching the Northeastern Indian tribes to play at games (LaCrosse) that left just one Indian standing as the winner . Hmmm . . they also taught the Indians to scalp the white guys . Then the English came in and brought tuberculosis-laden blankets from the lungers wards in the hospitals to the Indians who had no natural defenses to white Anglo diseases . That's why there are so many American India names to places here . . . Pontiac, Las Vegas, Reno, New York . . . no . . that was Peter Stuyvesant there . . a Dutchman . . . . . hm . . more rock critters crawl out . . . . ! Well, their names live on even if they don't . |
