680784 2008-10-04 07:48:00 Unless you have a specific need for Windows XP, I'd recommend you go with Windows Vista. It's got much better security features than XP, and is bashed unnecessarily by a lot of people. somebody (208)
680785 2008-10-04 07:55:00 And you can get USB to Serial adaptors now. jwil1 (65)
680786 2008-10-04 19:47:00 Whatever you do, don't buy HP. My son & his wife, bought one from Harvey Normans, at the end of last year; it gave nothing but trouble, went back 3 times. In the end they got a store credit, got themselves a Toshiba L300.
A colleague of mine had exactly the same problem as also someone else I know. I don't know if those last two cases have been resolved.

I have heard very good things about Asus's.

As for Vista, I heard lots of bad things about it and when I bought my new laptop, I was a bit leery about it. But frankly, I like it. Then again I'm the sort of person easily seduced by eye candy.

680787 2008-10-04 21:23:00 I would never buy a Dell laptop again.
Poor quality plastics, sub standard dvd drive, screen crapped out and service was poor. I now have a cheap little Acer and it goes just fine.

680788 2008-10-04 21:37:00 Isn't ASUS the only manufacturer to give a 2 year warranty?? paulw (1826)
680789 2008-10-04 21:52:00 Just killing some FUD here...
If you have an existing copy of XP from your old laptop then there is no need to get another one to dual boot on a Mac.

Only if your copy of XP is a retail one, not OEM

680790 2008-10-04 22:09:00 As for brand, Asus is good & I like the HP business notebooks, but wouldn't touch their home notebooks.

Take a look at the laptop before you buy it - the ones with the ctrl key in the wrong place are really annoying

MSI do too.
And the higher end business model (Read more expensive) Toshibas have 3 years.

680793 2008-10-05 19:04:00 Any laptop under $2K will be useless if it doesn't do your job.
Your question should be "What is the cheapest computer that will do ???"
Never buy anything solely on price.
