680739 2008-06-23 07:43:00 I know this may sound a bit insane.....

I would get a B/W laser and then a cheep colour inkjet.
a brother laser runs many reams of paper before needing toner....

two printers may by over kill for what you need but a B/W laser is so cheep to run.

I go that way too for a lot of my customers.
A bit of a waste using a photo quality inkjet printer to print black text like letters or invoices.

680740 2008-06-23 09:07:00 I would suggest a b/w printer (laser). They look more professional and cheaper to run.

Inkjets to me always have the bleeding edge when the ink contacts the paper - its not crisp.

I've never used a inkjet for normal work. We started with a color dot matrix the color option was a mistake cos most times you don't need it. Then we saw what inkjets can do at school - what an improvement and then we saw what laser printers can do (at school) and we were sold. We got a HP laser in 1995 and in 2006 we got a Canon laser MF.

I would say get a cheap b/w laser or even 2nd hand they are so cheap now. The new Brothers are not bad, some pple may argue, but its so cheap that some say the cartridge is more $$ then I would just replace a new printer instead, if it works in Windows then who cares and the output looks professional. Who needs DOS support these days anyway... If you do some color I would get a cheap color inkje as well ...

We have a A3 inkjet that I bought on trademe for $300 with $200 inks its used to cost $1600 or such like. So I just use it to print A4 and A3 full frame photographs cos smaller I just use frogprints.co.nz myself given 20 or 25c per 6x4. Even some pro photography stores charge 29c these days like Photo Warehouse.

For a laser if its just text print at 300dpi to save toner, if charts and stuff print 600dpi, for graphics you can print higher that some printers these days support. Such as screen shots, such as, photographs for audits and such like.

680741 2008-06-23 10:01:00 BUY A LASER

I own 3 printers,

Brother B&W Laser for the everyday use
Canon IP4200 inkjet for printing CD's DVD's and the odd photo
HP Colour Laserjet 1600 for colour pages

The HP Laser I saw in Warehouse Stationary on Sat for about $270 which includes the 4 startup colour cartridges which I calculated I should get about 4000 pages out before new ones are required.

Very cheap high quality printing, why would you bother with an inkjet?

680742 2008-06-25 22:38:00 Hi Folks. Reporting back... Bought the Canon Pixma iP4500 from DSE. Looks as though it will suit my needs. Prints a beautiful CD so it will be replacing my LightScribe for that task. 5 inks. Thanks for your comments. ;) Scouse (83)
680743 2008-06-25 23:55:00 Canon ?????
I have a Canon Pixma which uses a colour and a BW cart at $49.00 each and they must have holes in the bottom cause they do next to nothing and for some reason they both run out within a few prints of each other even tho I do limited colour printing. There was a survey on a forum some time ago and printers with separate colour cartridges (ie 4 colour) came out way on top.

That's why we weren't recommending cheap printers with only two ink cartridges. It's a well known fact that (with canons anyway) 4 or more ink cartridges are far more economic, and the higher end printers don't use as much ink an the cheaper ones. ;)
