411260 2005-12-08 09:44:00 I don't know how downloading more data optimises your speed.

Please also take note that asking for where to download illegal files is not permitted on this forum.

I'm sure he already knew that. He definitely didn't ask where to download illegal files though.

411261 2005-12-08 17:51:00 I'm on 2 meg as well, never seen it above 800k and often as low as 300k.
Still it beats the heck out of dialup :)

411262 2005-12-08 18:05:00 Just thought I would note that the new top spead on the net is 150 gigabits per second--equivalent to downloading over 130 DVD movies in one minute.

411264 2005-12-08 22:22:00 I have 2mbit/s through Ihug, and I can download at fairly close to full speed - averaging around 1.8mbit/s from download mirrors.

I would suspect that you are experiencing slow speeds through p2p programs, which completely depend on the number of people uploading the file - so even though you are on a fast connection, if people aren't sending you the file then it will still be slow.

411265 2005-12-08 22:44:00 im on orcons 2mb plan have downloaded maybe one demo that i got over 100kb/s OK, what you need to do IMHO is to check your speed on one of the speed test sites listed in giblers post. Also, download speeds are generally measured in KB/sec where as connection speeds are generally measured in Kb/sec B=Bytes b=bits, and there's 8 bits to a Byte, so a download at just over 100KB/sec plus overheads like the bits of data telling each packet where its destination is, will come to about the best you can get from 1Mb/sec
my modem is quite old got it a couple of years ago when i first got broadband should i look at updating it? its an old alcatel speed touch usb.I've never been a fan of USB for this sort of thing, but as even usb1.1 can support up to 12mb/sec of data transfer, I don't expect USB your problem. Perhaps after doing one or two speed checks you will know more. You may also find your speed varies at certain times of days, as other people sometimes have the cheek to put data through the same fat network backbone pipes as you are!

411266 2005-12-08 23:03:00 also assuming theyr'e downloading thru filesharing then the obvious factor that dictates speed is the speed supported by the 'other end' if the person you are downloading off is on dial up your download is gonna be slllllllllllooooooowwwwww. drcspy (146)
