680919 2008-06-21 23:21:00 Hi all, i have a freind with four kids that have a family computer, and they cant/aren't able to access/use it now because of a problem on start up.After turning on the power button,Windows XP(home edition)loads up,then the screen appears with all the named users(mum, kids)and prompt's you to click on your user name and enter your appropriate password, once you do this,a dialog box appears......Userinit.exe application error!
the application failed to initialize properly(oxc000005)
and you can not log on,or do anything at all with the computer('caus your not logged on!).Maybe something to do with the programme that controls the users and the passwords for logging on,that is not working properly. Can we fix this glitch somehow, and get grumpy kids on to the computer?!!
Thanks,Rog

680920 2008-06-21 23:32:00 Do a repair install on it.

And note: When running antispyware scans you do know you should be doing under EACH of the user profiles?

680922 2008-06-22 00:03:00 ok,so looks like an infected computer then....whats a repair/install,how do i go about doing that? rogsv8 (8994)
680923 2008-06-22 00:08:00 Will whatever boot into safe mode, if you cant log in normally??

If it can post a hijackthis log. (You may have to select Safe mode / Network, so you can post the log). Thats if its on / connected to the internet

That may fix it, if we can see what it may have

Or if theres another PC there, take the hdd out and put it in the other / working PC.

And scan it with a virus scanner

680926 2008-06-22 00:27:00 Basically the same thing as Speedy linked - just a bit more laid out ----

You will need your 25 digit product key for this .

Place XP CD in drive: Reboot or shutdown and start PC .
1 . When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD .

2 . Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen .

3 . Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console .

4 . In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement .

5 . Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP .

NOTE: if it doesn't locate your old OS STOP! As any further actions may result in wiping your data .

6 . Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup .
