680774 2008-06-21 05:00:00 Another question for you all...... Whats the best sub $2k laptop, not a great power user, don't play games. Just surf the net, play video and run MS Office. Are Dell's any good? There pricing looks sharp.

Thanks

680776 2008-06-21 05:31:00 Best sub 2k laptop would be a MacBook from $1799 - they run Windows too.
It will do everything your looking at since you are not a gamer.
Here is a look at the OS

680777 2008-06-21 06:35:00 +2 for Asus.

DONT get a Macbook unless you want to learn a whole new interface AND want to buy a copy of Windows XP/Vista! :)

IMO Dell comes second. Good prices and lots of upgrade options. You can buy Asus laptops from DSE and other retail stores. You will most likely have lots of change out of $2000 for a machine that provides more than what you need.

680778 2008-06-22 01:05:00 Thanks. It might be Asus again, I've had my A2500H for a while now. Might just get a new battery and see how much longer it lasts. What model Asus would you go for?
Cheers

Just killing some FUD here...
If you have an existing copy of XP from your old laptop then there is no need to get another one to dual boot on a Mac.
If you get Vista you are pretty much "learning" a new OS compared to XP so that issue remains regardless, however since Leopard comes with a very good user guide for the uninitiated that I posted earlier, it is not really an issue. As for having to buy a copy of XP or Vista - that only applies if you have specfic apps that don't have a Mac version although for the main ones like Office that is not an issue. Office:Mac or iWork08 will open MS Office files.

However if you would prefer to go with ASUS then go for it.

Now I've never used a MAC for more than about 30 minutes in my life, but if anyone needs "...to learn a whole new interface..." when considering a laptop - well, maybe they should perhaps think about going back to pen & paper.

680783 2008-10-04 07:28:00 Thanks for the input all. Well after doing a bit of looking I'm totally confused! I'm pretty much settled on another Asus but which model..... There seams to be a LOT of different models listed. Dick Smith is doing some deals.... So all, I'm just a home user, not into games, would like XP Pro and a serial port if possible. So a little bit of guidance would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
