680274 2008-06-19 07:51:00 Hi everyone,

I'm currently in the market for a couplet of laptops. Sorta midrange things, as they will simply be running database software, but the main problem is build quality, I just had our last laptop start to randomly crash-to-shutdown and refuse to turn on for a while. There's hundreds of things it could be, but it's already about 5 years old, so it's time for a replacement.

So, all I need is a good build quality laptop brand for a reasonable sort of price.

Thanks! :)

680275 2008-06-19 07:57:00 Asus laptops are quite good - reasonably priced and adequate for what you're wanting to do on them. jwil1 (65)
680276 2008-06-19 08:02:00 Budget ball park?

OS preference such as Linux, Windows or Mac (bearing in mind that all three OSes can be run on the same machine or Windows and Linux can be run on a PC laptop.

680277 2008-06-19 08:03:00 Dell and HP aren't bad and they usually have some sort of special going on. Any particular requirements and price range? beeswax34 (63)
680278 2008-06-19 08:11:00 Price range... preferably around 1500-2000, as I said, nothing special. Willing to go out of this band in special circumstances, any particularly good brands you can recommend.

Requirements, again, build quality. I want something that lasts, not performance-wise, but the damn thing is likely to work for a good few years.
Also, something that will allow me to install the "recovery" software selectively, so it doesn't try to dump and crapware on my beautiful clean install.

OS - Windows, unfortunately. I don't care whats preinstalled, i'll just wipe it and drop my shrunk down version of XP on it. Of course, I would prefer OS X, but the software we use is windows only.

And lastly, no, NOT HP or Dell. I have had experiences with them worse then mere words can describe... I am curious about some of the smaller brands that people here might have had experiences with.

680279 2008-06-19 08:25:00 Asus Company is one of the leading manufacturers of computer products in the world . Asus supplies very advanced and quality products to their customers . This company is the largest providers of computers, consumer electronics and communications in the market world wide . They have employed well trained staff and their research & development teams always The product development at Asus is totally based on the quality of the product and Asus engineers give peculiar care to acoustics, thermal, electromagnetic interference and even check for all the defects which have been overlooked to accomplish customer satisfaction .

What is an ODM?

Name Brand" notebooks/laptops are not always 100% manufactured by the company on the label . The so called "Name Brand" notebooks/laptops manufacturers just label their own . They get them from various Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) . A few examples of ODMs are Quanta, Compal, Clevo, Mitac, Asus, Arima .

These ODMs sell their notebooks/laptops barebones to different companies who then install CPU, Memory, Hard Drive and other accessories . These companies perform final assembly and stick their label (Brand) to it, and call themselves manufacturers .

Not only is ASUS ranked in the top 5 ODM companies in the world, their reputation in quality is second to none .

Clevo makes the Sager NP9262, the Alienware Area 51, the Voodoo Envy, the Hypersonic Aero . . . they are all the same computer .

Compal makes some of the the DELL, Hewlett Packard and Compaqs .

Quanta makes many of the Dell Latitude and Lenovo (IBM laptops .

Asustek currently has notebook orders from Apple computer, Sony, Samsung Electronics and JVC . They also make their own .

Personally I see more knackered Acers than anything else, todays has the record - it lasted the customer 2 days!

680280 2008-06-19 08:32:00 Mac runs all three OSes via VMware, Parallels or can be booted Windows using Bootcamp which means you can happily run Windows on a Mac if that fits your budget. That also means that you can run software on two different platforms at the same time if you have Windows only stuff that needs to be run.

OS X will do mysql

www.apple.com

Otherwise go with what ever is the best solution that is suggested by forum members. Quanta has a lot of the Mac contracts too.

Almost forgot
MacBook is from $1799.00 + GST
MacBook Pro 15" from $3198.00 + GST
Mac 10.5 Leopard is $199.00 +GST (Single user)

680281 2008-06-19 09:25:00 Thanks for the replies, everyone .

@vitalstatistix Yes, I am quite aware of the capabilities of Macs (Indeed, i am writing this on my beautiful 24" iMac right now) and Apple was always my last choice . (While that sounds bad (I really do love apple), its last because I didn't want to get a mac to just run windows on it 24/7 . ) Oh yeah, . the database being run is not mysql . It's (absolutely terrible) software called VIP, a medical database system, for things like patient notes and appointments, ect .

@pctek Thats a very helpful writeup, thanks . I HAVE heard good things about asus, but their designs seem so similar to all the others that . . . Hmm, I suppose that is just judging a book by it's cover .

I guess the choice is asus after all, thanks for your input, everyone .
