411899 2005-12-12 01:06:00 My wife has a glass crystal mouse but it fell off its stand and the ears also dropped off. Since then I have tried re attaching things using a couple of different super glues and also Araldite. Nothing has worked. The super glues seemed best but only for a week or so then the thing fell apart again. Anybody know what I should be using?

411900 2005-12-12 01:32:00 The traditional "glue" for broken pottery is shellac, not dissolved to make a glue, just melted in place by heating the pieces to the melting point of shellac. The colour would probably rule it out for this.

I'm slightly surprised that Araldite didn't work, though holding everything in place while it cured was probably a problem. I'm less surprised about the "super" cyanos. ;)

See if you can get a small tube of clear RTV, or talk nicely to someone who makes aquariums. ;) You need only a minute quantity.

411902 2005-12-12 03:27:00 The correct thing to use is Loctite 401 prism adhesive, a bit like super glue and I think you can get it from some hardware stores in fairly small bottles.

You must make sure that you clean ALL the old glue off, put a small drop on one piece of crystal then press both bits together so that the glue spreads out evenly. Slightly tricky as it's 'instant' and where you stick it is where it stays.

If it was a 'Swarovski' brand one you can take it to a jeweller and they send it off to be repaired.

Also note that it is NOT a good idea to leave those crystal ornaments in direct sunlight all day, eventually they'll fall apart.

411903 2005-12-12 04:17:00 You might find it cheaper to pay someone to fix it ... The many (magically effective) Loktite products come in small bottles, but they aren't cheap. ;) Graham L (2)
411904 2005-12-12 06:05:00 I agree, my 100g (think largish) bottle of Loctite has a price sticker $12.95 on it... but then it's been in the fridge a year or so  Shortcircuit (1666)
411905 2005-12-12 06:11:00 You have to use the right Araldite. Theres the proper stuff that takes 24hrs to set and then theres the "fast" clear stuff. Thats useless.
But yes, holding it in place is usually the problem. And would probably be noticable on a crystal object.
Maybe time for a new mouse?
