681107 2008-06-22 19:37:00 hello i have a p4 3.0ghz 512mb ram all standard graphics and sound.my problem is its overheating and just shuts off i have noticed that when i switch it on the fans run normal ie fast but when xp loads in my neon fan starts to flash then flash slow the cpu temp was 71c-74c on the bios the fans work fine as soon as you boot up they slow down considerabely.its a new install of xp and theres no other issues with it,ive taken the chip off and the paste is fairly dry but the system is very new ie all clean no dust so im stumped cheers in advance anfieldmods (13893)
681108 2008-06-22 20:56:00 71c-74C is not a very high temp. If over 85C then I would worry.

681109 2008-06-22 20:59:00 ive taken the chip off and the paste is fairly dry but the system is very new ie all clean no dust so im stumped I assume you mean you took off the heat sink.

If you remove the heat sink you need to reapply new paste, it sounds like there is no seal between the CPU and Heatsink.

681110 2008-06-22 21:48:00 Not sure I am reading that right, but if its 71c-74c CPu temp in the Bios, that is terrible. Under load that could easily jump 15-20C so yea that sounds like your shutdown problem.

As above, you need you re-mount the cooler properly.

681111 2008-06-23 03:34:00 You may want to add a few full stops. the long run-on sentences are a little hard to decipher.

How are you reading the temperature, from the Bios or a case sensor or with a utility etc ? If using a utility try a different one, or use whatever came with the motherboard as not all report the right readings.

70+ degrees at idle is way too high, even under load this is a little concerning. A figure more in the 40-60 degree range is what I'd expect. The fans running faster while you're in the bios may well be normal, once windows is running the system may slow the fans down to conserve power and reduce noise. It will only do this if the CPU is not running excessively hot which would seem to contradict your current situation.

If the system is new and under warranty you should really not muck around with it too much yourself, but take it back to your supplier.

If you want to fix it yourself, ensure the heatsink is installed the right way round and seated squarely on the CPU, having removed the heatsik you should really clean off the old paste and apply more. Don't touch the heatsink paste with your bare skin, use a plastic bag, latex glove, or paper towel etc

681112 2008-06-23 04:29:00 A new p4? There is such a thing? Or if it's under warranty, I want to know your supplier. Thebananamonkey (7741)
681113 2008-06-23 05:45:00 He dosen't say its a new PC. He just says its a new install of XP.

681114 2008-06-23 10:26:00 no its not a new pc just a new install. The fans run fast at idle ie on bios screen. Then under load ie with xp running they nearly stop and the neon fan is more like a pulsating fan.Im getting the temp reading from the bios screen which as stated is 72-74c.As for the heatsink rightway round how do i know, as the chip goes in one way and the heat sink is on top with the power cable from it directly next to where it plugs in to the board.Oh is my grammer better in this post whith enough full stops.
THANKS IN ADVANCE TO ALL.

681115 2008-06-23 10:44:00 Check out the thermal paste.

My BIOS says 28% C for motherboard and 38% C for CPU at the moment.
This on an AMD 4400+

I have no idea what the ambient temp is in this room at the moment.

681116 2008-06-23 16:01:00 y do the fans go slow once xp is up n running thats what i think is causing the problem in overheating.in the bios the fans run ok fast with the neon a constant glow but once its up n running they nearly stop and the neons pulsate weird and doing my head in.ive tried the fans in another pc and they run perfect ie they dont flash they just glow anfieldmods (13893)
