680965 2008-06-22 01:40:00 All the research I have done has suggested a reinstall or repair install.
Any other suggestions?

Also, is there a recommended registry cleaner program?

680966 2008-06-22 02:08:00 Normally in the workshop I would use ERD Commander to reset the password, BUT since you wont have that, you can try this - download UlitmateBootCD4Winows (http://www.ubcd4win.com/) - install it on a working XP computer - create the boot CD. (keep the CD its a very powerful program that can resolve and fix a LOT of problems when windows wont boot)

From the laptop, boot from that CD, once loaded (takes a few Minutes) - Click Start/Programs/password Tools/NTPWEdit - Click the "reopen" Button / Select your account / Change the password to a new one / click OK/Save Changes, Restart the Laptop without the CD in, and it should now log in using your new Password. Screen shot of menus/location booted from ubcd4win (www.imagef1.net.nz)

NOTE: use mirror #10 from download page- its more reliable

The problem was more than likely that RegHealer - more like regstuffer :)

680967 2008-06-22 02:09:00 A registry cleaner program wont remove remnants of trojans.

Or viruses / trojans if theyre still on the system

I would be careful what reg cleaner you use. Some can screw a system up totally

Only other thing you can do is take it out and put it in a system that works. Then scan it

You could probably do this (support.microsoft.com)

BUT you cant get into XP in safe mode either
