| 413220 | 2005-12-16 09:41:00 | From: home.nzcity.co.nz Cable cut in Southland disrupts communication for mobiles, internet 16 December 2005 Telecommunications in the deep south have been severely disrupted this afternoon following a break in a fibre optic cable near Clinton. Telecom says there is currently no 025 or 027 mobile coverage south of Balclutha. It says calls can be made from landlines south of Balclutha, but people wanting to call outside of the region will experience severe congestion. The congestion is also affecting internet access. Telecom says it appears a vehicle crash caused the damage, and it is waiting on word from its technicians on how long it will take to fix the problem. © 2005 NZCity, NewsTalkZB |

The exchange down here is in a big old building that would destroy any car that crashed into it & take minimal damage itself. |

| 413227 | 2005-12-18 02:50:00 | I thought they had a secondary microwave or satellite link back to Dunedin. Its bandwidth was only 1.5Gbit/s though, so maybe that got overloaded with the main fibre down. | MikeS (756) | ||
