412696 2005-12-14 20:38:00 Does anyone know of anywhere in the Wellington region that sells Bonsai? I'm looking to buy one for my partner for Christmas, but can't seem to find anything via google. Yellowpages is being a dog too.. hopefully one of you has come across them somewhere before? pixeldust (6619)
412697 2005-12-14 20:49:00 The nearest I could find on GoogleMaps was in ChristChurch...is that close? I don't live there......so I wouldn't know.

I can call them if you like..I get free long distance from my phone/ISP company here in the states......

412698 2005-12-14 21:05:00 Christchurch is too far, unless they ship. I knew I shouldn't have left it so long, but I only got paid today. Who would have thought they'd be so hard to find?

If you feel like calling them that'd be cool, it'd be good to know if they ship to Wellington?

412699 2005-12-14 21:14:00 Try contacting a garden centre, if they don't have them they will know where to get them from, a warning I believe they are very expensive. plod (107)
412700 2005-12-14 21:32:00 I've already been to a garden centre. They said they normally get a bunch in this time of year, but this year they haven't. They suggested California in Miramar, but that means travelling, and I'm hoping to find somewhere that will ship one to me, or is at least a bit closer to home.

From what I can see, they range from $30 upwards, which I don't think is too expensive. I'm not exactly looking for one that is 50 years old!

I'm not exactly looking for one that is 50 years old!I doubt that you'd get a proper bonsai for $30. You might get a small plant for that, but the sheer amount of time and effort that goes into making a bonsai is what makes them so expensive.

If you think about it, most bonsai that have matured to a stage you would want to buy them will have been a 'work in progress' for at least five years before the date of purchase, and frequently more than this. It takes a lot of effort and some specialist knowledge to get a mature tree to fit into a pot in the first place.

If you buy a younger bonsai you can also run into a few problems - a younger bonsai can need a lot more work to maintain the correct size and shape than an older one will need.

Finally, if you just want a small tree, I wouldn't buy a bonsai - a small-leaved shrub would probably be a better bet. As plants go, bonsai need more specialist attention than your average houseplant. However if you're prepared to spend the time and effort (not to mention the prohibitive price tag), they can be quite neat plants to have around - I think they're absolute works of art.

Wonder why Bonsai.co.nz (www.bonsai.co.nz) is selling 4-7 year old plants for $35 then? Perhaps they're trying to rip people off.

I'm not going to be content with a "small shrub". My partner had a bonsai tree in the states which he grew from 4 years old, and is well aware of what they are and how to look after them. I wouldn't try to buy him a shrub and pass it off as something special when it's obviously not.

Simply wondering if anyone knows where to get one, thats all.
