681265 2008-06-24 04:38:00  Um, I thought we had agreed that "raring" an avi file didn't compress it sufficiently to warrant it.

My reasoning for dumping it on a file site was that it does not matter then if it is not compressed much, he can get it any time regardless of size. Rar'ing will keep it's quality and maybe reduce it by 10% maybe

IF you email it at that size then it would probably get blocked as some ISP's have a size limit on email attachments.

681266 2008-06-24 05:01:00 I'd second the AutoGK recommendation, very easy program to use. rather than specifying the file size though you can just set the quality to 75.

At 10M for 35 sec you are probably talking about raw uncompressed digital video, the reduction by going to Xvid ( AutoGK's default output ) will be huge.

AutoGK's readme's indicate setting the quality any higher than 75-80% mostly defeats the point of xvid compression techniques.

681267 2008-06-24 06:10:00 Ok, got AutoGK up and running.

Did first conversion down to 2meg and conversion was fine but a loss of quality was noticeable, however that was to be expected and didn’t matter.

Did another at 75% and that reduced it to 6.84 meg with no noticeable loss of quality.

Now, am I to assume that this programme can reduce the size of an avi or mpg file but not convert it to another format?

681268 2008-06-24 06:24:00 Define format.

.AVI just describes it as a AUDIO/VIDEO file.

681269 2008-06-24 20:24:00 AutoGK does change format, it encodes to either Xvid ( default ) or DivX

.AVI is not a video format its a "container" - many different types of encoding may be contained within an AVI file such as raw uncompressed digital video/audio, xvid, dixx, mp4, etc. Audio can be mp3, ogg vorbis, mp2, pcm etc

To find out what codecs are used in your .avi you could try Gspot from www.headbands.com not sure if it's vista compatable.
