413688 2005-12-21 09:54:00 And I noticed you named your portable transportation machine a twuck ;)Actually, i call my "portable transportation machine"/housetwuck, Esmarelda. Not that that has any relevence, as Esmarelda runs on diesel, not Linux. :waughh: personthingy (1670)

413690 2005-12-21 19:48:00 I occasionally run either Knoppix or Morphix - just to play the fun Linux games such as Frozen Bubble :D By any chance, does anyone have Xandros?

Cheers :)

413692 2005-12-22 04:44:00 This P200mmx is runing Red Hat 7.3. Once I got rid of most of the software I don't use I find it runs surprisingly well. WindowMaker is my default desktop with different workspaces assigned to specific tasks. OK it's an old distro but the Fedora Legacy project takes care of securit updates. Just for fun I installed SuSE 10 on a spare hdd, 9 hours to install ;) but it managed ok and one reboot to a "usable" system. I'm staying with RH7.3 though because I've gotten to know it quite well. Had RH 8 on it a while back but some things you had to jump though hoops to get some functions going, which on RH 7.3 where quite trivial. I havent had much problems at all running later software such as Opera or Mozilla on this box either. It's networked to the last version of MS Windows I'll ever get quite happily, sharing internet connections and files etc.

Just downloaded and run DSL this morning and that distro has advanced quite a bit since I last used it. I havent had much problems at all running later software such as Opera or Mozilla on this box. Well fine.

I have just spent a while downloading Fedora Core 4.
5 CDs if you include the rescue CD.

Just installed this.

Needless to say I can access the internet.
I installed GRUB on top of my WinXPSP2 for a boot loader.
When I reboot I am back to Linux.
Note that I can not boot into WinXP right now.
No dual boot system I would think.
No sound either for that matter.

Grub will be installed on my 200 Gig hard drive as HD0 and this is partitioned as C: D: and E:

I installed Fedora Core 4 on a separate hard drive 8.6 Gig drive.
This drive is where I installed.

It would appear I have a boot issue.

413693 2005-12-22 04:56:00 dont do what i did.... i formated my drive because i thought i lost it completely. :p

i think you will need to do a fixmbr in repair mode? not 100% sure on the exact command.

413694 2005-12-22 05:28:00 Yep its just fixmbr under recovery console.

There is a way to dual boot linux and Windows (ubuntuforums.org) using the NTLDR file in C:\ which works quite well.

Its for Ubuntu but should work with other distros

Well I noticed that during boot I got one second to boot into WinXP and I had not noticed that before I posted.

I still now can get into WinXP but the default is into Fedora Core 4.

I would prefer that the default is in to WinXP.

I have not done what you did yet... :-)

This on a AMD3200+ CPU with 1 Gig RAM and a 5700 Nvidia grahic card.

I do not have a floppy drive in this system.

There is no need to use fix mbr as I want to keep the three partitions on the big hard drive I have.

Would like to dual boot Linux off a second hard drive so I can have a play and use a compiler again.

I would prefer that I can use WinXP SP2 as default boot.

413697 2005-12-22 09:10:00 its in the settings page somewhere, under a LILO program. look for lilo then it should say something about default boot time to FC Prescott (11)
