414706 2005-12-20 02:26:00 Anyway, Dell still insist on using Intel so that shows you how "commited" to gaming they are :waughh:

I run Intel. I play games. Sorry I'm so obviously out of touch.

414708 2005-12-20 02:45:00 Well, If you had gone AMD you would not only have a faster rig but you could have used the money saved on a better video card.

Anyhow, Unless you have upgraded your comp recently (apart from your video card) then its a good 2 years old, and back then Intel weren't quite so far behind the performance/Value for money curve.

Used to :-) The missus has it now. Mine is home built, but yes, it's got P4 2.6GHz in it. Of course, that might have something to do with all the overheating problems I had ......

But seriously, there are folks - like my dad - who love to play computer games but have no hope of choosing the components themselves. People can enjoy games and still have no clue about PCs - it isn't a crime. And that's why they buy Dells and HPs etc etc.

Of course, you can then make a valid argument that that is all the more reason for the Dells of the world to make sure they are doing the thinking for the customer and actually delvering a product that isn't going to spring annoying surprsies on them ....

Nope - the vid card has been my only upgrade and yes, back when the 2.6GHz P4 was fresh it wasn't such a issue. If I was building now I would buy AMD most likely. Of course, the week after I did that Intel would announce a P7 5.9GHz chip that actually generated cool air and so cooled the rest of the PC while providing 150fps in Call of Duty 2 and doubling as a espresso machine, cause that's just my luck ....

Hmm, now that would be a useful place to dump that extra heat from the cpu. I wonder if that would actually be possible.

414712 2005-12-20 04:08:00 Why "loathe". You don't want their products, and would rather assemble your own? Fine.

But that mum wants to be able to get her email, without worrying whether the video card is overheating, ot whether the CPU "needs" water cooling. She wants a computer which can be plugged in and work at a reasonable price.
.
Because 90% of the repairs I get involve the "brand" PCs. They don't last. They are full of rubbish brand components. Support is a joke.
Mum does end up worrying because the nasty things fail.

I have one here right this minute that has a ****ed motherboard. ANd as the MB is so old...as in they put the oldest thing in it at the time, therefore none are around anymore, so I am replacing the board and the CPU and the ram. Oh and the PSU cause its only 250w.
And the case because its one of those nasty little cramped no airflow things.

414714 2005-12-20 04:38:00 ... Because 90% of the repairs I get involve the "brand" PCs ... Because over 90% of the computers sold are made by the "brand" manufacturers.

Like all mass production manufacturers they make a range of products. The cheapest ones are good enough for the price. The more expensive ones are better. Many companys rely for their survival on servers made by Dell, Compaq, and HP. This site runs on IBM servers.

I sometimes buy tools. I don't buy them from the $2 shop. I generally don't buy the very best. But I know the difference.

414715 2005-12-20 04:45:00 Quit the dribble, The main negative points about the Dell was the software install,Lack of Install CD's and useless backup, This applies across the range.

Did you read the article?

Besides, Their cheap ones dont reflect value for money, and neither do their expensive ones.

You an intelligant gent, Why defend this carry on?

Perhaps you just give them respect for having an awesome marketing plan?

In that case McDonalds is awesome as well....
