413987 2005-12-20 22:49:00 Many multi-billionaires give nothing to charity, and no one says that he HAS to give a large portion of his fortune away. But he does. That money could be reinvested elsewhere to help him increase his personal wealth, but he chooses to give it to the needy. I'd hardly say that isn't a sacrifice.

The point I, and Metla I think, was trying to make is that the "sacrifice" Bill Gates has made is small compared to his extreme amount of wealth, whereas, the sarcifices others have made is huge in regard to their much less amount of wealth, yet Bill Gates is the one being rewarded.

Yes, this is true and I don't disagree, but saying that "He has made no sacrifice" is a little bit silly. How can you give away billions of dollars and NOT consider it sacrificing something of your own for the good of people in need?

413989 2005-12-20 23:51:00 Simply because he already has more then he could possibly make use of.

If I had 500 meat pies, gave 450 away and still had 50 to eat for lunch then I have sacrificed nothing.

If I had one pie and gave half to a hungry person I would have made a larger sacrifice.

Having said that, Keeps your eyes off my pie...... :D

413990 2005-12-21 00:00:00 His contributions deserve to be recognised, Times person of the year? hmmm dont think so but then I dont know the criteria from which they choose.

I wouldn't consider what he has done a sacrifice,

Definitions of sacrifice on the Web:

* forfeit: the act of losing or surrendering something as a penalty for a mistake or fault or failure to perform etc.
* personnel that are sacrificed (e.g., surrendered or lost in order to gain an objective)
* endure the loss of; "He gave his life for his children"; "I gave two sons to the war"

But do admit his behaviour is to be applauded, very few in his position could actually make the donations of his size, but if you compared the actual % of his wealth donated with others I would guess he would be left wanting.

Good on him anyway, like you said - he didnt have to do it.

413992 2005-12-21 01:25:00 As "User" says - Tall Poppy Syndrome.
Bill Gates seems to be the target of anynbody with a gripe - even the weather I guess!
Gates is a philanthropist as well as a shrewd businessman- never doubt it.
Rgds to all

413993 2005-12-21 01:31:00 For the sake of accuracy - the award was made to three people:

"For being shrewd about doing good, for rewiring politics and re-engineering justice, for making mercy smarter and hope strategic and then daring the rest of us to follow, Bill and Melinda Gates and Bono are Time’s Persons of the Year"

No sacrifice involved or expected.

Thats some nice fluff they wrote there, Based on that blurb and whom they gave the award to I personally dismiss these awards as crap (that will teach em)

Whoever runs the soup Kitchen down the road from me, Feeding the down-trodden gets my Person(s) of the Year award. Its a worry that the people in the lines are mostly elderly, Doesn't bode well for the future

Bill gates can get buggered, If I was World Prez I would strip him of everything down to 30 or so million. The man has enough money to support an entire Country, thats where it should be, Not in his pocket.
