 I'm sure Telecom are way ahead of all of us when it comes to plotting and scheming ideas such as this.

For a while they tried deliberately adding jitter to data on thier network.. so the overall flow rate was the same for webpages, but voice data was broken up. That got spotted instantly and the volume of the complaining was a little too loud for telecom.

I hear they are planning their own VoIP release soon, so some of the problems that have plagued VoIP users in NZ will no doubt magicly disappear.

413874 2005-12-19 18:14:00 I've had extended conversations with friends overseas, and it has been very reliable. Latency is an issue, but it is no worse than latency you get with a normal phone line (in my experience anyway). somebody (208)

Hmmm, by 'everyone', I think you mean one person, namely me, who said there were difficult time delays between here and Pitcairn Island. I have never experienced that to the same extent when I have been talking to people long distance on an ordinary phone. I think it may have occured in telephone conversations with Scott Base, but that was about 10 years ago and I can't recall the details now.

It is a minor irritation because you aren't always sure that the other person has finished what they wanted to say, and you can talk over each other and it then gets a bit messy. However, the problem is simple to overcome and you quickly get used to it. I wasn't suggesting that people should not use Skype over this issue - we continue to use it for a specific purpose, which is to obviate the cost of what would otherwise be prohibitively expensive professional conversations with someone in a remote location.
