413491 2005-12-18 01:53:00 The Major issues with NZ broadband is not download speed, it is Upload speed and cap.

We all know 128K UP is a pathetic Joke, and there is no point having 24M pipes on 10 gig caps or less . Ihug and a few others have addressed half the problem with realistic caps like ihugs 40gig and 80 gig.

Ihug Performance....... I switch from Xtra 2MB to Ihug about 2 weeks ago and have seen very little difference. I have seen several people trying to test International speeds with Bittorents which makes me laugh and is always good value.

Downloading a game demo from Nvidia(very consistanly quick server) even in the evenings I get 230-250 KBPS which is fine. Latency is also pretty much about the same as Xtra to international gaming servers. For the record I can also still max out DC++ international hubs on a 2MB connection at any time of the day (around 800 MB per hour), I accept different areas may differ, but I am very happy with Ihug at the moment.

413492 2005-12-18 02:19:00 So why do the major players waste so much bandwidth by not peering in NZ?Because they don't see a gain from "free transit" they prefer to be able to charge for access to their network. ninja (1671)
413493 2005-12-18 02:19:00 File sharers would hate better upload speeds because it would chew through their cap too fast,

haha

but it would be great for gamers & small web developers or anyone who works from home.

I agree

Actually as this is a Ihug thread, Ihug don't add upload traffic to your cap (free upload).

Also most file traders I (Including myself) limit upload speed, mainly as this can effect there download speed and browsing while download etc. If the Up was increased to 512, you could still limit it.

There is the Old school file traders like myself that would proably not limit on a faster up as I like to be fair and with a decent cap it would not be an issue anyway.

413496 2005-12-18 07:25:00 Because they don't see a gain from "free transit" they prefer to be able to charge for access to their network.

They are forced to give "free transit" to all the off shore providers and making the likes of Radio NZ and other NZ sites shift their hosts overseas for commercial rather than engineering reasons makes them look short sighted and greedy. Without content they'd have no customers.
