| 413405 | 2005-12-17 08:45:00 | Aaaargh - I'm feeling a reminisce coming on! Must resist...can't... When I was a computer operator for IBM in the late 1960s the mainframe computers were huge beasts with flashing lights all over the front panel - no LEDs either, these were genuine small incandescent lamps. When the machines ground to a halt (which was quite frequently, this being a research and development facility) we had to copy down the light sequences, which were in binary (see, this is relevant!) and pass them on to the engineers for investigation. The really skilled amongst us could actually stand at the other end of the room and get some idea of what the machine was doing by recognising the patterns that the lights were making. These huge beasts (IBM 360/65 for those with long memories) were about 2 metres tall and several metres long and had a massive 1mb of memory. And who amongst us has had the pleasure of trying to decipher an IBM mainframe storage dump - pages and pages of densely packed hexadecimal? |

| 413406 | 2005-12-17 10:15:00 | And who amongst us has had the pleasure of trying to decipher an IBM mainframe storage dump - pages and pages of densely packed hexadecimal? A Burroughs 3500 for me along with COBOL, EBCIDEC, punched cards, paper tape, TC500 mini computer (Assembler code) Those were the days. Don't forget octal code as well as hex. :-) If you programmed in those days you had to ensure your cade would compile and fit in 12 Kb. |
