2008-06-23 02:47:00 | What, if any, is the accepted way of reducing the size of AVI Files? Just as we reduce WAV to MP3 and BMP to JPEG. Oh, and what are the tricks and traps best programme to use for conversion, if any? :thanks

2008-06-23 03:28:00 | Ahhhhhh, I see. Well I've got this avi clip that runs for 35 seconds an it's a whopping 10meg. I want to send it to the brother-in-law in Aus but I don't think he'd thank me for a 10meg attachment. What size approximately would this be reduced to?

2008-06-23 03:29:00 | That depends entirely on how much you want to compress it! :p Get the program and have a play with it.

2008-06-23 03:36:00 | Zipping/raring a media file that size is only going to cut 100-500kb off the size of it if your lucky. Media files don't zip up well. | wratterus (105) | |
2008-06-23 03:38:00 | Cut it to pieces then | Speedy Gonzales (78) | |
2008-06-23 03:43:00 | And the difference between one 10mb attachment and three 3.3mb ones is...? Splitting it is hardly reducing the file size, he still has to download it one way or another, and then has to worry about installing other software at his end. | wratterus (105) | |
2008-06-23 03:45:00 | Thanks guys, now youve pointed me in the right direction Ive had a quick look on Google and am getting a much better response to Compressing the file as opposed to Converting the file. Im about to have a play, as suggested by wratterus but wonder if the person receiving the file needs the programme that compressed it, to uncompress it?

2008-06-23 03:49:00 | Handbrake doesn't compress it like Winzip compresses it. It's still going to be an .avi file, it's just going to be smaller (lesser quality). It's not going to affect anything at the other end. It basically re-renders the file, then saves it in the format and quality you choose.
