681014 2008-06-22 02:12:00 Hi. As above, I'm trying to interconnect my desktop which is wired to a D-Link G604T Wireless Modem / Router, and a D-Link DWL-G630 Wireless CardBus Adapter in my Windows 98 Tecra 8000 Laptop. The Tecra is unlikely to be able to support Win 2000, or better.

The Tecra has successfully installed the card and can 'see' the network, but won't communicate (e-mail and IE) with the modem / router.

The same card in another laptop equipped with XP worked fine after relatively straightforward setup, with WPA enabled.

I can only get the Tecra to work with WEP enabled, and then it works fine. However, that means everything has to be WEP (rather than WPA). There is nothing in the Card's manual regarding whether WPA works with Win 98.

I have a sneaking suspicion that, although the card is compatible with Win 98, Win 98 doesn't support WPA. The WEP appears to support a hex key and that's what i'm using in both machines.

Can anybody confirm that?
Alternatively, is there a way I can use WPA with Win 98?
If I'm stuck on WEP, what degree of security am I missing out on?

Cheers.

681015 2008-06-22 04:05:00 I think youre right.

Your adapter SHOULD work with 98 SE (not 98) for the WPA to work

WPA2 (which is different from WPA) however according to Google wont work on 98/ME or 2000.

You need XP +

Diff between WPA / WPA 2 (en.wikipedia.org) and WEP (en.wikipedia.org)

681016 2008-06-22 04:17:00 Thanks, Speedy. I have got Win 98SE, but it still doesn't work. Any further advice? Cheers. A Team (13613)
681017 2008-06-22 04:26:00 According to the Dlink site it should work, are you sure you installed the right drivers for the revision of the card ? (www.dlink.com)

Look in its config if its got one for the different settings

681018 2008-06-22 05:01:00 Yup. Had the original disc and checked on the site for the latest driver for that version (E). It definitely 'works', just can't seem to use WPA. A Team (13613)
681019 2008-06-22 05:16:00 Well what happens when you double click on the wireless icon in neighbour network or whatever its called and go into its properties? Speedy Gonzales (78)
681020 2008-06-22 07:35:00 Hi Guys,

Think you will find WPA (even the original version) needs XP + SP2.

681021 2008-06-24 08:29:00 Hi, Speedy G. Reference Post #6, of yours;
If I open 'Network Neighbourhood', I'm presneted with another icon, 'Entire Network'. If I right click on that, I geta dialogue box saying, 'The properties for this item are not available.' Is that what you meant? If not, let me know.
