412917 2005-12-15 04:13:00 I was wondering what everyone thinks of Telecom regarding the latest letters that have come to light...

Links!:

Open Letter To Minister of Communications David Cunliffe (www.nbr.co.nz)

Just give us some comments...

412918 2005-12-15 04:18:00 This is how "major players" in "the market" behave. If anyone expects anything else, they will be very disappointed.

This is why governments in the past found regulation necessary to protect individuals.

“As a result most consumers continue to rely on slow dial up Internet connections......"

Bullocks! That quotes the first clue that the article is biased

I only know 4 people who actually dial up, and a truckload who use some kind of broadband connection, even when thier houses have holes in the outside walls...

The dial up users are such infrequent net users theres no point in broadband for them.

412920 2005-12-15 07:15:00 Interesting to see IHug's proposal today that if there is local loop unbundling they will commit 20 million odd to installing equipment in exchanges immediately and let other ISPs use it... also offering something like 24mbs download speed to joe average at 'reasonable' prices.

They apparently made the offer/play after Ms Gattung's 'warning' letter got out and IHug have said that they want their dealings/motives to be 'transparent' (I guess unlike Telecom's). Kinda puts the thumbscrews on telecom/Commerce Commision/Govt I think.

412921 2005-12-15 07:57:00 "Joe Average" doesn't live close enough to the exchange to be able to get 24mbs. When the fibre network is extended to the end of the street those speeds will be possible. Of course then Ihug or whoever will need equipment at the end of every street and possibly their own fibre back to their network. $20 million in those circumstances won't last long. PaulD (232)

Also, as your beloved telecom rewire the whole damn country so we are connected on fibre fed local distrobution points you will be close enough to the fibre to get DSL, and your neighbours enevitably dodgy connection will gain health. The local exchange distance will no longer be relevant, as the local exchange will no longer exsist (Hence why IHUG can safetly offer $20M to help upgrade its rubble, i mean equipment  )

You can moan all you like, but fact of the matter is that it is getting sorted anyway, but you may have to wait your turn on that one.

Have you considered asking your neighbour to get broadband on, and you pay for it and take a feed over the fence for you till TC upgrade your neck of the forest?
