| 414888 | 2005-12-22 18:47:00 | I just thought I would start a "Did you know?" thread because I am procrastinated on spending my hard earnt money. A/some/most? The LED (light emoting diode) in smoke alarms should blink on for a brief second, every minute or so, if it does not blink, then the battery is flat, too flat in fact, to give a audible warning as the battery crosses the fence from good to totally useless. So there you are, stare at your smoke alarm and save money.............. ......... Now each New Zealander owes the world $33,000 according to yesterday NZ Herald. |

| 414889 | 2005-12-22 19:58:00 | My smoke alarms are more intelligent than that, they don't waste energy flashing at people who are not looking, they just give off regular warning beeps when the battery is low . Actually, it would be better if the LED alarm flashed when the battery was low instead, because nobody notices when something that obscure stops happening . As for our International debt, I don't recall signing the papers, and I owe nobody anything, so somebody out there must owe $66,000 instead . Same with the reported $4 billion on credit cards in NZ . Apparently (collectively) we owe $4 Billion which means that individually we must owe $1000, but allowing that about one third of the population is below 15 or above 65, and making some wild and outrageously inaccurate assumptions about credit card use, most will owe about $1500, that means that somebody out there is carrying $3000 just to help me out . Thank you kind sir, whoever you are, and may your infestation of camel fleas depart this instant . Cheers Billy 8-{) |

| 414894 | 2005-12-23 01:51:00 | We were going completely batty for a few days a couple of weeks ago until we realised the occasional high pitched beep was coming from the smoke alarm to tell us the battery was flat. Thanks for reminding me, I still haven't replaced them. | pixeldust (6619) | ||

Thanks for reminding me, I still haven't replaced them. I think as my #1 posting told, when the battery is "flat" there is no LED blinking, or no high pitched beep, I suppose the blinking LED stops one burning out one's ear drums (& falling off a chair, press the "test" button). |

I see . I think we got that OK Eric, it was pretty easy to read . My comments were directed at the stupidity of manufacturers providing an "I am working" indicator that uses up battery power when nobody is likely to think of looking at it, and you are even less likely to notice that it has stopped flashing, vs an audible alarm to tell you when to change the battery . I had an old alarm in my garage that had been there for six or seven years (after being in service in the house for a few years before that) and a couple of months back it started beeping . The battery was years past its use-by date but hadn't wasted energy flashing lights . That's my opinion, your smileage may vary . Cheers Billy *<8-{E |
