414645 2005-12-22 01:06:00 I've got a P4 2.4 with a bent pin (Metla, don't comment!). I want to straighten it but too many years of :dogeye: on PressF1 have impaired my eyesight so I can't quite get to it properly to straighten it.

Is it worth my while buying a desk mounted magnifier to fix it, or will that be a waste of cash?

414646 2005-12-22 01:12:00 Use a credit card, Slid it into the row row of pins and bend her back into place, I presume its on or near the outside of the grid.
Alternatily use a pen, Slid the end that the nib pokes out of over the bent pin.

My eyes aren't always good enough to make out the exact pin, So I take a punt then see if it will jiggle into the socket.

Oh yeah, I have bent a few in my time, Its an excellent way of creating stress.

414647 2005-12-22 01:30:00 Yeah it's on the outside, 2nd from the corner. But it's bent double on itself, so I doubt your cunning ideas would work with this one.

I've got the implements to straighten it, eg tiny tweezers, but seeing it well enough to work on is the problem. :(

414648 2005-12-22 01:45:00 I once got a PC to go again who's CPU fell out of the case onto my hand when I opend it. Bent pins left right and center. The tool I used to straighten them was a mechanical pencil.. absolutely magic for the job. I know how you feel about looking at it, the repeating rows give me a headache if I look at them for more than about 20 sec

414649 2005-12-22 02:08:00 Tweezers or the fine tube of the mech pencil won't work if the pin is badly bent. Small long nose (or "needlenose") pliers are what you need for that. The pins are fairly hard, and they bend easier than they straighten. :(

Can you not find someone with better (or worse: I'm short sighted and the close focus helps for fiddly jobs like that) eyes to do the job?

414650 2005-12-22 02:15:00 The blade of a Box cutter / Stanley knife ought to work just as good too. With the long straight blade. It should theoretically align the pin with the rest of them all. bob_doe_nz (92)
414651 2005-12-22 02:27:00 Its bent flat or bent over on itself?

In either case I would perhaps use a Jewellers screwdriver to get it moving, If its bent at the half-way point then you hane an issue, I would still use a a jewellers screwdriver but I would perhaps hold a credit card up against the row of pins while doing it....

How did u bend it like that?

414652 2005-12-22 03:40:00 Of course, you could just add a piece of string and use it as the traditional bent pin to make a fishing line. Graham L (2)
414653 2005-12-22 03:48:00 Its bent flat or bent over on itself?Bent double. So there's a bit of it sticking upwards, and the upper half bent back downwards... imagine yourself touching your toes with back straight.

How did u bend it like that? That's precisely the question I wanted you NOT to ask!

414654 2005-12-22 04:05:00 it's on the outside, 2nd from the corner. You probally wont even use that pin, just chop it off. :badpc: Rob99 (151)
