415467 2007-12-27 23:22:00 Interesting that nobody much bothers to mention Mazdas . They are as reliable as a Toyota or Honda but without the premium price tag .

I have run several Toyotas and Mazdas as company cars and both withstood merciless thrashing while running up high mileages . I also had three Holden Commodores that fell to pieces under me, one so bad that the Dealer replaced it several months out of warranty .

I owned Honda Integra once but the cost of servicing was too high and the dealer couldn't fix a stalling when cold problem so I sold it (in summer) and went back to Mazda . They are a very good vehicle at a sharp price . My current vehicle which was bought second-hand (only people with more money than sense buy new) is an NZ-new Mazda6 premium specced with 8 airbags and to get that from Toyota or Honda would have cost another 5 grand or more .

I surveyed the market thoroughly before buying again and still came back to Mazda as unbeatable value for money . I'm getting better than 600km around town on a 50 litre fill (previous car was 400km) and over 800km on trips too, so fuel economy is great . I don't drive like an old woman either!

Cheers

Sameish economy I get in my 2L Bluebird SR20, and definitley not driving gently. Had an Uncle buy a new Mazda3, he quite likes it. I wouldn't mind a new (2000+) Mazda, but anything older... :badpc:

415470 2007-12-28 00:31:00 My car I bought a couple of years ago is a 1995 Honda Civic EXI NZ new. It only had 26,000K on the clock. And it was owned by a little old lady. Leather seats, AC, auto, Honda Mags, etc.

415471 2007-12-28 09:42:00 The question is whether to buy either a Nissan (Camira) Primera or Mitsi Galant.
The Nissan is an excellent engineered car - drives well - go for the manual ahead of CVT or Auto. The 2.5 V6 Galant goes bloody well but does not have the crisp handling of the Primera, the 2 Lt has less to recommend it, especially with an Auto transmission.

Both the cars mentioned are 10 years old and at the end of their theoretical design and economical lives - (It is only in NZ and Australia, apart from 3rd world countries, that one considers a car of this age has any value) pick the one that gets the best mechanical report, and use it till it dies.

As for Toyota, they have the best quality record for Japanese cars - its just a pity that so many of their models can be charitably described as whiteware on wheels - ie as exciting as a washing machine or refrigerator.

Mazda are OK, reasonable well made, mechanically not as well engineered as Nissan.

You are right on one thing plod, I've done my research but you are wrong on the other two! I'm not always right, as Mrs T points out much less subtley and at regular intervals (my tongue in cheek response is that I am rarely wrong, so we end up at a stalemate).

Secondly, years ago Toyota was my vehicle of choice. It was their excellent safety engineering that let me survive this (www.imagef1.net.nz)in the late 70's with walk-away injuries only, back when very few manufacturers were taking crash survivability seriously. The other vehicle was a Mk III Cortina and they got hurt bad. Not my fault btw, they crossed the centre line at speed on the open road late one night and left me nowhere to go.

Sadly when I went looking for a modest fleet deal a few years later they wouldn't even discuss it, but Mazda offered a great deal with substantial savings so I changed allegiances and have never regretted it.

I agree that Mazda are not quite up there with Toyota or Honda in overall refinement, but they are their equals in reliability. The latest 3 and 6 Series are very popular and the 6 in particular is selling like mad so at the moment they are not too far behind in the sales stakes either. Interestingly Top Gear gave the Mazda 6 a rave review as a driver's car, but hasn't done anything complimentary with Toyota or Honda that I can recall.

So, you were not wasting your time, there's more to all of this than meets the eye.

Cheers

I have to agree, when ever I park my corolla in a car park, upon return I never know which one is mine.
If you want style toyota just isn't the right car. If your after something bland, reliable, cheap(debatable), good resale value. Then toyota offers all the above.

415474 2007-12-28 23:15:00 The Toyota .

As my friend said, the Dog and Lemon Guide author says, "The 3 best makes are Toyota, Toyota, Toyota" .

Having said that, I have a 98 Primera and my wife a 98 Sentra . The Nissans so far have been pretty good .

Now which is the Toyota of the computer industry . . .

What is style anyway? Something which some brands claim have over other brands .
