415456 2007-12-27 07:03:00 My mate see's about 2 Toyotas a year for overhaul in his transmission shop and they are generally high milage taxis. As someone has mentioned stay away from anything with a cvt trans in it as they are very expensive no matter what make they are.
while on the subject my parents have just brought themselves their first brand new car a Toyota Yaris at a nice price of $16,500 thats $3000 grant off retail price thanks to a bit of haggling from my brother. Lesson don't take the sticker price

We got over 20% off the price of a new toyota at a field day, and there was no need to haggle. Aren't Yaris made in France these days? I would never buy another french made car as they are unreliable. I would personally try to get a Japanese made Toyota.

415457 2007-12-27 07:07:00 Yep, Toyota's are the only thing to buy if want reliability.
Mitsi's are about as durable as an iceberg in the Sahara!!!

Unless you go for a Lexus of course, which is obviously a toyota anyway.

415458 2007-12-27 07:13:00 So if anyone was thinking of buying a Honda Jazz don't, as they have CVT.

I have never liked Honda. They do however appear to be very popular with Asian drivers.

415460 2007-12-27 10:31:00 Honda build quality and reliability is excellent. I have owned Hondas for the last 17 years, never had a problem: City (190K km), Accord (110K km), CRV (40K km - and counting).... (I'm not Asian BTW). johcar (6283)

Do tell us the source of info on the undesirability of CVT.

415462 2007-12-27 20:20:00 So i'm wanting something that'll last next 5 yrs with no major probs/expenses, and isn't fuel hungry and low insurance cost etc.
Nissan Primera Camino 96

2nd one is a Mitsi Galant 96

Neither. Friend had a Mitsubishi, cost her thousands.

I had a Nissan once, the hoses all went, one by one, cost heaps as you have to almost dismantle everything to get at them.

Get a Toyota with no extras, no aircon, no electric windows etc,.

You pay a premium for name, same quality from Nissan.

Hoses from same source, you had bad luck.

415464 2007-12-27 22:28:00 Primeras are very reliable by all accounts (I know a few people who own one, and the car dealers told me the same thing when I was looking to upgrade my mirage)

I was talking to a friend of my father's (who is a mechanic) the other day & he said that the imported mitzis don't last the distance, but the NZ new ones are very good.

I drive a 2001 Mazda Capella now, but I haven't had it for long enough yet to tell you if it is reliable or not.
