682742 2008-06-26 21:32:00 Last weekend I downloaded the latest free version of AVG. Since then I’ve had problems accessing the internet and seem to have lost a number of shortcut icons from my task bar. One of these is the volume control icon that won’t appear, even though I’ve gone into Sounds and Audio Devices and re ticked the box saying “Place volume icon in the Task Bar”
Is this likely to be associated with the new version of AVG or is it something else?

Thanks JR

682743 2008-06-26 21:49:00 The volume icon issue probably isn't related, but AVG 8.0 leaves a lot to be desired. Did you get the free version, or the paid one?

If it was the free one, dump it and get Avast home. If it was the paid version, get rid of the security toolbar, and disable daily scanning.

Has it got a firewall? (AVG IS) The AVG firewall was rated as one of the worst on the market. Delete all profiles, then create a new profile, with 'allow all' as the option selected, and name it home or something easy. Hopefully that will fix the internet access issues. Are you on dial up or broadband?

And don't get AVG again. They have gone far downhill this year. :(

682744 2008-06-26 22:39:00 Thanks Wratterus,

Yes it's the free version of AVG 8. I'll take your advice and change. Is Avast downloadable?

Thanks JR

682747 2008-06-26 22:45:00 Excellent.

Go to the link Speedy posted. Make sure you uninstall AVG before installing Avast, they don't like each other. :p

682748 2008-06-27 02:25:00 And run CCleaner after you un-install AVG to get rid of any errant entries left behind. beeswax34 (63)

No kidding. AVG LinkScanner is masquerading as IE 6, which is making my website stats look... interesting.

682750 2008-06-27 04:46:00 I used avg from about two months about a year or two ago.I don't think it detected much viruses.

I moved from Norton->AVG->Kaspersky->ESET
