415426 2005-12-24 04:00:00 Hey.
I'm getting me a car for next few years at uni (i play a heap of sports - and need car for that)

So i'm wanting something that'll last next 5 yrs with no major probs/expenses, and isn't fuel hungry and low insurance cost etc.

I've found 2 cars, but i need your guys help in deciding which one to go for.
First one is a Nissan Primera Camino 96
Done 85k
1.8L Auto
Dude wanted $7k, but he's agreed to my $6k

2nd one is a Mitsi Galant 96
80k
2L Tiptronic
And samething - wanted $7k, but dropped to $6k.

So, what do you reckon i should go for?
Does the Primera have a Cambelt or anything that'll need replacing? As i was told i'll have to pay $500 for the Galant as soon as it gets to 100k
And whats the difference between a standard Primera and 'Camino' version?

Thanks

415427 2005-12-24 04:51:00 Try here. www.google.co.nz

The Nissan has a chain driven OHC, while the Galant has belt driven OHC which needs replacing at about 100,000Km. The nissan well probibly have more mechanical noise from the engine because of the chain and probibly never has to be looked at.

Trevor :) PS do a same search with the Galant.

415428 2005-12-24 05:30:00 No doubt both are imports, therfore stay away from the mitzi auto, if you don't pm me and I have a mate that will be quite happy to take a few thousands dollars off you for repair ;) plod (107)
415429 2005-12-24 06:29:00 Primera would be my pick - assuming that it is mechanically sound, the km's sound a bit low. Get that checked.
Primera would be chain drive so no cambelt change needed but would recommend using only good quality oil changed regularly. The engines in those were used in a quite a few different models which makes servicing parts relatively cheap.

I dont see any reason for insurance to be any higher on one more than the other - unless there is a "steal" quality for one more than the other, worth finding out.

If you assume 12 - 15k per year means you will be selling it at around 170 K, too high to get any decent price so be prepared for very low resale price, although keeping her well maintained will always give you an advantage.

Not a fan of mitzi's but would choose it over the primera if there were obvious maintenance concerns with the primera.

my :2cents: worth

415430 2005-12-24 06:48:00 cool.
thanks.
Yea not worried about resale value! Just want something trouble free and cheap to run.
Pretty set on the Nissan now :D

I'm thinking about getting the car transported down to me (from Auck to Taranaki) so you think an AA check would be sensible?

Thanks

I assumed that you had seen and test driven these cars so I would be getting someone to check it out. Never had an AA check done before but from what I've heard they are pretty thorough.

415432 2005-12-24 07:30:00 Don't touch a mitsubishi. engine, transmission & electrical faults.

Don't touch primera with cvt transmission

Ring transmission shop & ask which makes keep them in business

Go for a toyota if you want the best chance of a reliable car

I agree, worked in workshop where 90% of the vehicles were toyota. Boring cars to work on - all we ever had to do was service them, thats it. Toyota far outshine any other Japanese make in my opinion.

415435 2005-12-24 08:31:00 You are wanting an economical car, yet you are looking at automatics in the 1 . 8-2L range?

It would be more economical to look at 1 . 6L and under manuals .

My :2cents: which is probably worth 0 . 5c considering my knowledge of cars :p
