I have a MBP coming in the next few days and wonder how to setup or use a modem.
My connection is Xtra Broadband and when I want to send a fax I just do it through Winfax and it uses the internal modem.
Now, the MBP has not got that(internal modem) and I have not bought an external modem.
Is there a way I can still fax through; either the MBR or through(XP)on Vmware without having to buy the mac exterior(or a mac compatible) modem.
I'm looking forward to hear from the M.. techies!
Thanks

683383 2008-06-28 21:28:00 Although your MBP has got faxing facilities built in you will need to buy an external 56k fax modem for it from a local Apple reseller. Apple dumped the 56k internal modem years ago.

I had a look on my iMac just after I got it. Although the set up procedure is straight forward I don't have an external fax modem for it to work.

There is a discussion here on Apple support forums about it
discussions.apple.com

Looks like you need an external USB dongle for the purpose

Connecting a telephone line to the MBP won't help. (And pushing a phone cord into the ether port won't work either, so don't even try it.) The MBP doesn't have an internal modem, as most older Apple laptops did. To send a fax from the MBP, you would need to attach an external modem. Apple sells a USB dongle for the purpose, store.apple.com but you can find less expensive modems that will also work.

683385 2008-06-28 21:57:00 Everything that is relevant, yes, 56k modems aren't, faxes....just barely. The faxing application is included you just need to get the USB dongle. Why use a fax when you can email an editable PDF or just send an email or get the client to fill out details on a secure website. OK I admit the processes that some people or institutions use are still back in the dark ages for various reasons. vitalstatistix (9182)
683386 2008-06-29 00:45:00 Why use a fax when you can email an editable PDF

PDF is not meant to be an editable format - it was designed to show a document exactly how it was intended by the author. If you are emailing something you would otherwise fax, then chances are they don't want to edit it & PDF is the right format to use, but "editable" PDF (although technicially correct since it can be edited with software most people don't have) is not a term I would expect to be used.

your going to need a external modem of some sort.
Have you looked into using one of the online (www.mbox.co.nz) services?
