683251 2008-06-28 08:04:00 i have a HP pocket drive that i use to transfer stuff between computers at home and tech and work, but all of a sudden yesterday it wont work, i always "safely remove hardware" and its only 5 months old.

I was transferring a file from HDD to the pocket drive and then safetly removed it but had to edit the file later on and pluged it in and the error came up...
have 3 usb ports on laptop, none recongise it, and tried it on polytech pc and same error came up...

How can i repair this? dont want to reformat as really need the work from the pocket drive...

been working 100% fine for so long and all of a sudden its dead...

using HP laptop with vista...

Hope someone can help :)

683252 2008-06-28 08:34:00 Try running up a linux cd as a live user no installion then see if you can read the ext drive I have done this several times and recovered valuable data for people gary67 (56)
683253 2008-06-29 04:25:00 I'll do that but how can i fix the USB error as I really want to use my pocket drive on laptop, its really essestional to my every day useage of computers...
do I need to update drivers or something?
I've searched online and not much help so far....

683254 2008-06-29 06:13:00 well is a USB problem or has the hDD failed in it, since you treid it on a polytech comp it sounds more like the drive might be failing. The linux option might be able to retrieve any data that you need. Then you really need to try it in another comp just to see. Also does it show up in my computer when its plugged in? gary67 (56)
683255 2008-09-22 14:11:00 I am in the exact same situation as you KIWI CHRIS. I recently (& stupidly) moved all my media files from my hdd to my hp pocket media drive to free up room and improve efficiency. Bad idea. It worked for about 2 days, before packing up when i was listening to my favourite tunes.
I realise you made the initial posting quite a while ago, but i'd like to know how you went with a solution? I will be incredibly annoyed if i have lost everything... Be great to hear from you.

683256 2008-10-26 20:25:00 heya...sucks u had the same problem - after lots of trying and failing i took it back to shop as it was covered by supercover warranty, they tried it on 3 computers and just said its stuffed and gave me a new one no questions asked....
and have been extremely busy lately so havent used it but yesterday was trying to backup my computer to the media drive as changing computers - using a PC instead of Laptop now, but was moving work from lap to pc...and guess what happened.....brand new Pocket Drive and instantly it failed halfway thru transferring stuff from the Laptop HDD to the drive....
was such a shock to me, am unsure what to do now, will be trying Noel Leemings again...

These drives must be poorly made if they go on the blink so easily....

So yeah sorry cant answer your question with a solution....you could always try linux like someone else mentioned - i couldnt as dont have Linux here...

683257 2008-10-26 20:30:00 Take it back and get your money back Chris then buy something else, I buy my own cases then buy Seagate drives to put in them, you can often get a case for about $50 on trademe. Also I always copy my data and don't delete from the main comp until I know the data is safe but then I back up to 2 different drives gary67 (56)
683258 2008-10-26 20:42:00 That might be a good Idea, I actually have a bigger 300gig HDD but its quite bulky for carrying around as I work from home sometimes and rather than having work on computer @ work and computer @ home I like having it on 1 hdd, but I guess I'll have to adapt and use it considering the HP Drive seems to be really unreliable....or just use a USB Stick to transfer work back and forth...
I havent deleted anythingh from laptop yet so havent lost anything yet!

683259 2008-10-26 21:14:00 well i had bad luck a few days ago with a few seagates from same retailer (DSE)
and they failed through the backing up of data but when i took the hdd out of the enclosure and into my pc it worked fine but still unreliable as usual but easier to read and copy data off... so id rather go for western digital as theyr more reliable and less noisier as seagates....

683260 2008-10-26 21:23:00 well i had bad luck a few days ago with a few seagates from same retailer (DSE)
so id rather go for western digital as theyr more reliable and less noisier as seagates.... You're joking about that aren't you ??

In my workshop I have six times as many failed Western Digitals in the junk box than Seagates - in fact I only have 2 Seagates failed in customers PC's.
Once when my supplier was out of stock of a certain size I had to use Western Digital's on a couple of customers PC's - talk about noisy crap :yuck: Both failed on the customers PC's within 6 months.
I used a Western Digital 160GB Drive in a removable enclosure earlier this year that a mate gave me, he didn't want it, as it was given to him - brand new - within a fortnight I gave it back it was so loud in the enclosure when running it was too annoying.
