683143 2008-06-28 00:57:00 My granddaughter has a new laptop. Fitted up to use wireless it works fine, if she is outside the house but inside she gets no signal. She wants to use the internet and has been told she may need an external aerial. The shop who sold her the equipment have no idea what she is talking about so she asked me. And I'm no better. I can understand the requirement but have no idea where to get the thing or what to do with it. Advice please.

683144 2008-06-28 01:03:00 I take it you've (or someone) has a wireless router?

Is it wireless internet, or adsl with a wireless router?

If you have a wireless router, you may need a better / longer / bigger aerial to get it to work outside.

683145 2008-06-28 01:03:00 What if she sits right next to your wireless adapter? In the same room? gary67 (56)
683146 2008-06-28 01:18:00 Strange that it would work outside and not inside.
Sounds like she is picking up and using a neighbours wireless signal.
Does she have a wireless access point / router herself?

683147 2008-06-28 01:28:00 Or there's something inside screwing up the signal / interferring with it Speedy Gonzales (78)
683148 2008-06-28 04:49:00 I didn't make the situation clear enough.
She lives in the country - very remote. Her router sits in a friends house I think is about 80 metres away.
So the signal has some way to go.
She can receive the signal if sat outside but when she goes indoors then it is lost. She has no phone line.
Trouble shooting has indicated an external aerial will cure the problem - but where does she get one - where does it connect to etc.

683149 2008-06-28 05:47:00 Probably something like one of these (www.dse.co.nz)

Altho something on the roof maybe better.

Is this using something like WPA?

683150 2008-06-28 23:24:00 Thanks Speedy.
I note that a certain amount of expense will be called for even if she can get the device in Christchurch.
Thinking about my experiences over 60 years ago building one valve radios etc (& crystal sets!), I realize I am now a complete novice and don't know what I am doing. Where would she plug the aerial in?
I don't see anything on my laptop for an aerial and I don't have hers handy to look at it.
I also remember that aerials were odd things. My father built a very high and wonderful set up with insulators all over the place for our radios that worked well. I used to throw a length of wire out our bedroom window. Worked every bit as well. A friend struggling with indoor aerials for his TV got fed up and knocked the wire out of his way - it contacted the metal window frame and resulted in a perfect picture- he used the window permanently after that.
I may call in my favourite technician to sort the problem out. He has in fact helped me before and been cheaper than buying the stuff and doing it myself. And no I am not giving his address to all and sundry. He is MINE.

683151 2008-06-28 23:40:00 Have you got a wireless router or something??

If you have, an aerial (it should have one), would go in the back. Most are removable.

Or if the USB adapter (if its USB), is plugged into the laptop, get an USB extension for it. The aerial is properly internal in this case.

Other than that, a router would probably be better, so you can get a better signal, and at least something to plug an aerial into
