683105 2008-06-27 22:03:00 Welcome to the forum Mary. WHAT version of Windows is it? XP? Vista??

What are the specs of this laptop?? Brand/model etc?

If its either of these, txt her to see if she can get into safe mode (press and hold F8 down), after she reboots. See what happens.

Can she get in then or does it go back to the Welcome screen?

Also if its XP what Service pack is installed on it?

683106 2008-06-27 22:06:00 She is running xp pro and has tried safe mode with same result. marydean (13905)
683107 2008-06-27 22:10:00 Get her to try last known good configuration (hold and press F8 down again).

See what happens

683108 2008-06-27 22:15:00 Its a Toshiba satellite laptop one of the TEla laptops that the teachers get. marydean (13905)
683109 2008-06-27 22:16:00 She has already tried the F8 thing...it didn't work marydean (13905)
683110 2008-06-27 22:18:00 What she's tried safe mode and everything else you can select when you press F8??

As well as last known good config?

There's more than 1 option there
Speedy Gonzales (78)
683111 2008-06-27 22:25:00 She doesn't understand the other options so is a bit reluctant to try. (Monkeys and dynamite) marydean (13905)
683112 2008-06-27 22:29:00 Well if last known good config doesnt work, she may have to (if she can, or someone else will have to) take the hard drive out (it'll be IDE or SATA), and put it in a working / desktop computer.

And scan it for viruses etc. Or if this is a school laptop, give it to the IT guys there (If the school has any), and get them to check it out

683113 2008-06-27 22:36:00 I suspect it is a virus. The Ministry give us Etrust from CA and I think it is a poor virus protector and doesn't update as it should. My first hunch was that it was a virus as she got a flash and then a return to to the logon. I will txt her your latest advice. Thanks for trying to help. She is in for a miserable weekend as it is her only PC. Thank God I have 2 others when this happens.:thanks marydean (13905)
