683066 2008-06-27 20:28:00 So all you want to know is how to change the key? Speedy Gonzales (78)
683067 2008-06-27 20:45:00 Theres this (magicaljellybean.com)

But Avast seems to think its w32.trojan.gen

Dont know if its a false positive or what

You could try an an older version on that site

683068 2008-06-27 21:48:00 The Link Speedy posted / magical Jelly Bean is fine. Download that file, unzip it and make sure you take a note of the current product key if you don't have it written down just in case the new one is not accepted.

The Manual Way - Have a look at This article (articles.techrepublic.com.com) - Under Solution

683069 2008-06-28 07:31:00 i have tried both methods validate through keyfinder app and manual, after changing the key i reboot but it never asks for re-activation so i do that manually too by running "oobe/msoobe /a " when i click next to activate it just says its an invalid key. would this be happening because i have SP3 installed now?. gum digger (6100)
683070 2008-06-28 07:35:00 Keyfinder only shows you the key and lets you change it. It doesnt validate it

Did you do this bit first ??

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrent Version\WPAEvents ?

Change it in keyfinder after then try %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe /a ?

Also, make sure u dont get 0 mixed up with o etc

do u mean not get 0 mixed up with o in this step

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrent Version\WPAEvents ?

if so no iam not, in OOBETimer i changed the bit where its 08 with 07.

you reckon its saying unauthorised cdkey coz i have sp3 installed and the keys i have tried are for sp2 and just windows xp, i kno they are genuine 100%.

683072 2008-06-30 01:27:00 SP3 should be ok. As long as the key is for the version of Windows you've got, it should work.

Yup sometimes, people put 0 (zero in) instead of O (letter O), or vice versa.

Or they've typed a letter in wrong somewhere

Definitely false positive. It would be detected as such because it reads your CD key from the registry. Something that CD-key stealing trojans would also do
