| 683051 | 2008-06-27 11:51:00 | Hi I have AVG8 installed to run a check automatically but am astounded at the time it takes for a complete check - way over 2 hours and still rolling along. It never took this long before I installed version 8. I have an NEC Pent4, running XP and using 14.8GB of 70GB available with 512 MB of RAM. Do you folks think this running time is normal? What's your experience? Is there something I should be checking or something I can do to speed this along? Any advice appreciated as always. |

| 683055 | 2008-06-27 22:53:00 | Yes, AVG 8 is slow now, but it checks for spyware too. Haven't decided if I'll change to Avast, I had a look at it but can't see where you can set up auto update and auto scan on it. | lakewoodlady (103) | ||

Now takes about 46 mins., used to take 20 min. Tests about 57,000 objects. It is now checking for Spyware as well as Virus etc. I am on dialup. It does a auto update shortly after you connect to Internet. If you go on once a day to the Internet that once is enough. You have to tick the right boxes Does an auto scan OK on the time I set in the box. My thought is if Avast scans all in 5 mins., you have not scanned for very many nasties. Set my scan for 5pm time I have had a meal, watched the news it is all finished. |

It uses a real time scanner I think so scans all incoming traffic | gary67 (56) | ||

Haven't decided if I'll change to Avast, I had a look at it but can't see where you can set up auto update and auto scan on it. It updates while youre in windows / automatically (Avast). Or you can manually update it (right mouse on the a in the taskbar - updating). OTOH, if you want to do scheduled tasks (so it scans at a scheduled time), you may need the Pro version. Which isnt free forever. Avast also includes antispyware and anti-rootkit. Youre right Gary. It (Avast) scans in and out email, websites, over a network. And will even tell you if something is infected, if you use IM programs, P2P programs, and check / scan files you download. I've also noticed that it can detect infected files in a folder, (it'll tell you what its infected with) as soon as you open the folder. The only few differences between Home and Pro is script blocking and Scheduled tasks theyre not in Home. There's a few more I think, theyre on the Avast site. |

| 683059 | 2008-06-28 02:54:00 | I have just changed from AVG to Avast so that I can run the same program on XP and W98. The first scan with Avast has been popping up a lot of virus warnings that so far have proved to be false alarms. If you have a similar experience, check the files at http://virusscan.jotti.org/ for a selection of 2nd opinions before deleting. | PaulD (232) | ||
